I am usually smart when it comes to downloading and opening files but I was stupid and opened a smilefiles program to download a file I was looking for. Huge mistake!

Anyways, AVG appears to have resolved some of the threats, but browsing the internet is terrible. I get tons of popups and windows trying to get me to install all sorts of programs. Even simple browsing is difficult right now.

Any advice is greatly appreciated! I do have some technology skills but will likely need some guidance on this one.

I have read some things on this virus and am worried that it sounds like it will continue to get worse and more difficult to get rid of the longer I wait. I accidentally installed this virus maybe 2-3 hours ago.

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Windows Vista, 7 or 8 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.
Do NOT use spoilers.
Do NOT edit your reply to post additional logs. Create new reply. I'll not get any email notifications about edits so I won't know you posted something new.

I think MBAM wiped it out completely but I will still finish the final steps of your tutorial.

I appreciate the help. So I can help friends/family when they have a virus, I am curious what the main purpose of each of the six steps was. I am assuming generally the first few steps were to read potential issues within my system and the last few were programs that specialize in different issues, as well as a double/triple check to get rid of everything bad. It will just be nice to know generally the purpose of each of the six items I installed.

Also, are you able to suggest the best protection from future viruses, spyware, adware, etc? I know everyone has their personal opinion, but for free stuff, which do you personally suggest at this time?

I am still laughing at myself as I should have known as soon as I saw something like, "SmileFiles", that is was something to make me do everything but smile. LOL

We use different tools for different purposes just to make sure we have everything covered.

I really don't have any preferences regarding AV programs.

Remember that it's always about your computing habits first, then security programs.

I'll post some more hints at the end of this topic.

In your Event Viewer I can see number of these errors:

Error: (02/09/2015 09:57:06 AM) (Source: disk) (User: )
Description: The device, \Device\Harddisk1\DR1, has a bad block.

So let's take a look at your hard drive....

Press Windows logo key aa922834-ed43-40f1-8830-d5507badb56c_91. and start typing the following:
cmd
Right click on "Command Prompt" on the left, click on "Run As Administrator" at the bottom of your screen.
Command prompt window will open.
Paste this in:
chkdsk /r (<------watch for "space")
Press Enter.
Chkdsk will run.
Reboot.
Download ListChkdskResult.exe (by SleepyDude) from the link below:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/12354842/My%20Tools/ListChkdskResult.exe
Double click on it to run it. It will take a few seconds to scan, then it will open a Notepad window with the log. Copy and paste the contents of this into your next post

The original issue that got me here in the first place is I have some external hard drives with issues. I am attempting to recover as much of the data from those drives as possible. I got the virus by trying to download a program to recover data.

Anyways, the bad blocks, I wonder if they are on the external drive I had plugged in while doing all of these anti-virus programs, or if it is an issue on my laptop? I also wonder if they might be because I did copy some files that may have had issues on my external drive to my laptop.

I will go through your suggestions very soon.
