I just got the G3258 and want to overclock it. Do I need to update the BIOS first or is the version that came with the motherboard ok?

MSI list over 20 Z97 boards, what model is it actually?

Current BIOS seems to be typically V 1.8 or 1.9, or maybe 2.6 for a Gaming 3.

You should update the bios if you have not already installed the OS.  Read through the bios updates to see what they address.
