For the past 6 months or so I have been having intermittant keyboard and mouse issues.  The keyboard will freeze temporarily (for 30 seconds, or up to a minute or two) and then come back online.  The mouse will freeze up too similarly.

I have tried:

A new mouse and keyboard (Gigabyte Keyboard and included mouse, Gigabyte keyboard and Razer mouse, Gigabyte Keyboard and Logitech mouse MX620, brand new Logitech K330 keyboard and included M125 mouse).

Brand new hard drive and new windows installation (Windows 7 Pro.  Old install was 7 Home Premium)

Turned off all overclocking and turned off USB power saving settings.

Only software running is Avira, Trillian and Firefox.

All drivers are updated.

Other sites said to uninstall AMD Hotkey Poller Service (it was not in my services list).

Video Card is AMD XFS4970.

I just plugged in a crappy Dell keyboard I brought home from work (wired) and my Razer mouse with the cord in (not using Wireless) and it seems to be working.  But I can't be 100% sure because it is a sporadic problem.  Any advice?  I am at the end of my rope.

What else can I try?  I am at my wits end.  It is extremely frustrating with normal web usage, and makes it impossible to play any games that require the keyboard (trying to attack anything with number keys? Welcome to death.)

In the midst of new HDD and new windows installation etc.....was Firefox actually installed FRESH ?....or was it simply transferred from the original installation with addons intact ?

Firefox was installed Fresh.  Only add-on is LastPass and AdBlock plus (both of which I also had before these issues started).   The issues were from before the new HD (that was done a couple weeks ago, hoped it would resolve the issue.)

ok....I may be groping in the dark here.....and hopefully someone will chime in with better suggestions....have you tried uninstalling/removing both these addons ?

The reason I go in this direction is that I have had a similar issue with my mouse (not keyboard) ....and I eventually tracked it down to various addons updating.

I could, but that would render my computer useless.  I need LastPass because it is where all my work and personal passwords are included.  Also, the problem happens in other applications such as trillian when Firefox is not running.

If you were to disable both these addons and open one of the games you play.......and see if you are now able to play it....

I don't have any games installed on my new HD.  I cancelled by subscriptions to WOW and LOTRO months ago.  It happens in just normal computer use - I will be typing and suddenly it freezes.  30-60 seconds or so later, it will unfreeze and post the last few keystrokes.  I just want to be able to use the keyboard normally in web browsing, word processing, etc.  I am not using Firefox now - I switched to Chrome which has no add-ons.

Do you have any sleep/hibernation/smart power saving features enabled ??

Edited to add : Does this happen in Safe Mode ?

Haven't tried in Safe Mode yet - will do so.  It's really tough because it's a sporadic issue.  I already checked the sleep/hibernate settings and disabled the settings that might affect USB devices.

Try setting your Power Saving scheme to Performance, and disable all sleep/hibernation/smart power saving features.

Do these things in order, and separately.

1. Set the power scheme to Performance.

Test the PC for sufficient time to eliminate that possibility

2. Try it in safe mode with you usual power settings in place.

This is definitely a case of ruling out each possibility....so approach them on an individual basis in order to rule each one either in or out.

Ookay.   There is no 'Performance' setting in power options.  But I did set it to not restrict the power, and made sure that it isn't set to disconnect USB at any point.

I loaded up in Safe Mode, but wasn't able to function.  No network access means I couldn't connect to anything (such as the internet) and I have a giant monitor so it was so stretched and skewed that the ratio was way off and gave me a headache to look at. And, it being a sporadic issue that I cannot reproduce on command, I couldn't keep that up.

I went back in and did find the "Performance" setting - sorry, it was hidden under a "more options" link.  I also saw that the USB suspend setting I had disabled had somehow turned itself back on.  I have it off again now, and will see if it makes a difference.

* Edit - It is still freezing up.

I restarted this morning before installing these programs, just in case the USB power setting I changed last night needed to go into effect.  It froze again as I was trying to type this.

Okay, looks like I do have a game installed - Husband installed Lotro. Sorry I didn't include that - I haven't played it so I forgot.

You posted earlier that you had tried a wired mouse and keyboard and hadn't experienced any problems at that time.  Perhaps I missed something in reading through these posts, but I don't see where you mentioned if this resolved the problem or not.

After the installation of Windows did you install the drivers for your wireless mouse and keyboard?

Also, if you are going to boot into Safe Mode and want to go online you should use Safe Mode with Networking.

Why is your antivirus disabled?

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.
