What I have: Latitude D610 with MS-DOS and Windows 3.11 on a 2GB primary partition (on a 60GB disk).

What I would like: being able to choose between MS-DOS and some version of Windows 95/98/ME on each boot.

What I have tried: booting Windows ME installation media. Apparently whichever channel of disc (OEM I assume) I have doesn't support installing on anything other than an empty disk.

My Question: Which version of Windows 9x works best for dual booting with MS-DOS and Windows 3.11? What partition layout would be best for this setup (single partition 2GB fat16 or an additional 8GB fat32 partition, etc)?

Thanks!

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Windows 98 would probably work best. 95 is buggy as heck and ME... Well, you could say it is the child of 9x and NT, since it runs a modified version of dos designed to only be able to boot the os.

I ended up using my 98 upgrade disc and installing on the same 2gb partition as dos. The dual boot works as I expected, and everything was fine until I installed the Intel chipset drivers. Now the storage controller is supposedly causing a resource conflict, but none show up in the resource list.

Anyone remember how to reset the hardware configuration?

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

You would need to reinstall Windows 98. If you don't have an install cd then tough luck you'll have to get an install cd.

I got it, deleted the enum key. Got the required resources set manually sms everything looks happy.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

zcomputerwiz, you bring back fond memories for me -- I used to be piggy-in-mud happy configuring MS-DOS 3.3 - 6.22, W31, WfW 311, W95-98SE.  You should see some of the batchfiles I ran back then.  :)    I never tried the dual-booting, oh brave person!  :)
