Slow Shutdown

recently my pc taking long time to shut down ,sometimes I have to click END NOW two -three times and wait long time (up to 5 minutes).
os win xp home sp2
p4 ..2.67 GHz
512 ram
Norton internet security
can you please offer advice on how to speed up shutdown

When you get the "end now" screen, what program is it that you are ending?
