MY computer went blank, i could start it but there were no icons or taskbar. I reinstalled windows xp . and completed following steps by reading a previous post

First >> Start >> Run Box >> type, or copy / paste the following one at a time, pressing Enter after each line :

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
netsh winsock reset

See if this clears your cache -

Next download TFC Cleaner to your desktop > Double click on the Icon (Black Garbage can) Click Start > let this remove all unwanted Temp files >> Click OK to Reboot when it has finished -  (I am not sure whether I had to reboot after that)

following I got after that Farbar Service Scanner Version: 17-01-2015

You should download and install XP SP3 and do all updates. Use your NIC card and a Ethernet cable to do the updates. That may solve your wireless problems.

Open a command prompt in an admin account. Type

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

Are there any yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager?

Do you have obtain IP address and DNS server set to automatic in your TCP/IP ipv4 properties?

I would restart your modem and router. If that does not work, I would download Windows SP3 on another computer and install it on the computer with SP2. The SP3 link I gave is a standalone installer.

From your first post the scan said you had SP2.

If you now have SP3, Right click your Network adapter in Device Manager. Select Properties and under the Details tab select Hardware IDs in the dropdown box. Copy and post the first line in your next post.

You have the Atheros Communications Inc.® AR81Family Gigabit/Fast Ethernet Driver. I want to verify the exact Atheros chipset. Do you have a make and model of the computer?

I went to HP's site and it seems they are removing drivers from the older hardware. First create a Restore Point.

Download the Atheros driver here

Version: 2.1.0.1

I am assuming you are using XP 32bit. Click the green download button. It may take awhile for the download to beging. Unzip the file to a folder on your desktop in an admin account. For 32 bit you want only the files labeled X86. You can delete the three files labeled X64. Right click the Adapter in Device Manager and under the Driver Tab select Update Driver. Select Have Disk and point it to the inf file in the folder you unzipped on the desktop. Reboot the computer. Can you now connect?

I downloaded all five downloads but when I opened zip folder and double clicked on X86 files, either a windows 'security catalog' or a notepad file was opened, other than that I couldn't do anything.

By the way I downloaded all hp mini drivers long time ago and they are on my usb drive, I installed these drivers and didn't download any driver from HP website.

You don't double click the X86 files. Just unzip to a folder on the desktop. Then when you update the driver in Device Manager, you point it to the inf file.

Sorry I am not very good in computers. I downloaded the topmost driver in Atheros driver link because that one is the latest and then followed the instructions of how to update driver (from the link you sent) but still no luck. By the way under network adapters one is broadcom, other is Qualcomm Atheros AR8132 PCI-E fast ethernet controller. Previously  Qualcomm was not included in the name. Perhaps I did some thing wrong which caused the name to be changed. One more question please Atheros is perhaps Ethernet driver, will updating it will also fix the problem of wireless driver. thanks

Qualcomm purchased Atheros. That is why you see two names. I am not sure why you are having problems finding the Network. You can see if this is some kind of hardware issue by downloading the iso file of Puppy Linux. For your computer I would download version 5.2.8 here. You can create a bootable flash drive of Puppy using Yumi.

For Yumi make sure your Flash Drive is in the First dropdown box. Then select Puppy in step 2. Browse to the iso file for Step 3.  Also check the box to format the flash drive. Then press Create. Any data on the flash drive will be lost so make sure any data on the Flash drive is backed up.

Boot the USB flash drive and attach to your router with an Ethernet cable. See if you can get online. Then see if you get online with Wireless. There is a Wireless Wizard in Puppy that is easy to follow.

Edit: You can also download this utility and run it. Press Advanced Repair and reboot.

Yes I will do that but I experimented to see whether my computer can connect to unsecured network in range and it could connect, although when i opened internet explorer, it could not open the page.

and i ran the diagnostic tool and it said perhaps it was windows firewall settings which is causing the problem. In windows firewall setting  No exceptions allowed was checked which i unchecked but still nothing.
