Hi!   I have a Dell Inspiron 7110.  Its old, but not ancient like me.  It has 6.0 memory, 5.90 total physical memory, and 2.56 available memory.

She is running SOOO slowly that even I could beat her in a race.   The lovely little blue "loading" circle spins round and round and never stops.  I can't scroll around on the page because it is "loading."   I have run CClearner, Malwarebytes, defragged, AVG scan, to no avail. I have also cleared history, etc..... The hard drive has 507 GB free of 582 available.  I don't save a lot on this hard drive, but I do have an external where a lot of info goes.   That one is 29 GB free of 75 GB.  My mouse (cordless) is also running jerky (new battery), and I'm just generally unhappy!!!  :-(    The memory concerns me because that seems to be an AWFUL lot of memory being used.  I use Google Chrome, and have read that could be the culprit, but I've used it for at least 4 years, and this slow running has just been over the last few weeks.

What more info do you need?    Can we refresh this old girl?   Thanks SO much for taking pity on me!  :-)

Hi Patti :)

If you allow me too, I can give you a hand with getting that laptop back in shape, so let's get started!

Is Google Chrome the only application being slow? Have you tried other browsers? How is Internet Explorer behaving?

Please uninstall the following programs:
  • AVG PC TuneUp 2015;
  • Free Youtube to MP3 Converter;
  • Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer - Unless you actually use it. If you use it so you can have "Google Search", you can make it the default search provider in Internet Explorer;
Reason I'm asking you to uninstall AVG PC TuneUp 2015 is because it's another of these useless "PC Booster" programs. They do nothing but add bloat and take resources off your system, without doing anything else. In fact, AVG PC TuneUp is known to break a lot of Windows features, creating issues. Uninstalling it usually brings back performance that was once loss. For the Free Youtube to MP3 Converter, you don't need to use a program, there's a really simple, easy to use website that can do it for you:

http://www.youtube-mp3.org/en

It's been around for years now, still rocking. Also AVG is an Antivirus that uses quite a lot of resources compared to other free ones, so if you want to change it for a more light-weight one, you could.

Aura,   Done, done and done.   I didn't even SEE the Google toolbar for Internet Explorer!   I don't use IE, but have it on my computer because some things I use require IE.  (don't know why!)   I've had AVG for years and never had an issue with it, but would welcome other suggestions.  Thanks for the link for You Tube converter.  I'm going to reboot and see what's happening now.

Phanton ...  Google Chrome is the only browser I've used for several years.   I don't like IE, have tried Firefox and am not crazy about it, but will go back to Firefox if necessary.   IE is NOT in the running!     :nono:

Internet Explorer is part of the Windows OS and is needed by some of the other integrated programs to run properly. Also, the "Internet Options" of Internet Explorer defines a lot of settings for many other programs, third-party or not. Hence why it's always good to have it enabled, for troubleshooting purposes. Just don't use it and it'll sit in its corner. I'll make suggestions once we're done dealing with the main issue :) How's your system feeling now after the reboot?

I was only asking to determine if this is exclusively a Google Chrome issue.

If this happened over night, it could also be caused by adware.

Check your LAN settings.

In Google Chrome:

  • Open Google Chrome
  • Click on the Menu key > Settings > Show Advanced Settings.
  • Scroll to the Network section > Change proxy settings.
  • Go to the Connections tab.
  • Click on LAN Settings.
  • Uncheck "Use a proxy for your LAN..."

Aura .... system is still sluggish.   Was just posting on facebook, and I was typing much faster than it was showing, and I (still) couldn't scroll up or down another page (different tab) that I had open.  I've had 6 to 8 tabs open with no problems whatsoever, now I can't even open two.   Wonder if it needs Alka Seltzer?    IE is sitting in a corner and behaving itself.

Now I'm confused ...  I have two very nice gentlemen trying to help me .... shall I follow both of you? or just the first that responded, which would you be you Aura?.  and Phantom, use proxy for your Lan was already unchecked.    ***sigh****

You can follow both are instructions, it's good. Alright, you said that a lot of your RAM was in use right? Let's see by what. Right-click on the taskbar and select Open Task Manager. From there, click on the Process tab. Click on the Memory column once to order the processes by memory usage (highest to lowest). From there, take a screenshot of the Task Manager window and attach it in your next post.

How to take a screenshot using the Snipping Tool
Follow the instructions below to take a screenshot using Windows' Snipping Tool:
  • Press on the Win Key + R to open the Run box;
  • Enter SnippingTool and press on Enter;
  • The Snipping Tool will open, asking you to choose the area to take in the screenshot;
  • Left click on the area where you want to start the screenshot, keep it, and drag the cursor across the screen;
  • Once done, release the left button to take the screenshot;
  • In the editing window, click on the File menu then Save As;
  • Save the screenshot in a folder that you can access easily;
  • Once done, attach that screenshot to your next reply;

Task%20Manager.jpg

Sure hope I'm doing this image thing correctly.   Still running slowly ...  I think molasses is faster!   What's going on with Windows Live Mail using so much memory?   I just "repaired" all Windows Essentials programs through the Control Panel.   I can hear a "churning" like I could hear when I had a tower.   I knew that the computer was "working" then.   However, this is a laptop, and it sounds like the "churning" is coming from my external hard drive.   I'm going to turn that off and see what happens.   If the image thing doesn't work, I'll keep reading to see what I did wrong!

Pat

Edited to play with image URL ... phew! that's BIG!

Are you using Windows Live Mail? If you aren't, you can uninstall that component from Windows Live Essentials. I don't really see anyone using it. Also, instead of using Windows Media Player you could use VLC.

Yes, I am.   I was using Internet Explorer for mail, but dumped that entire thing.  Windows Mail is not too bad, but had a slight learning curve for my old brain.   I FINALLY love Windows Media Player, and finally also learned THAT newest version.   Is VLC easier?  I have over 1300 mp3s on my external, and I love each and every one of them!   I'm a 60s child, so oldies is my game.    Is it normal for Windows Mail to use that much memory?

I turned off the external hard drive and left it off for awhile.  In the meantime, I googled "external hard drive, slow computer," and came across some fun things.   I just got done updating all my Intel drivers .... all out of date!!!    Turned the external back on and for right now, all is well.   We'll see how long that lasts!       :)

I don't think that it's normal for it to use that much memory. Let's take a new screenshot, same instructions as before, but this time, before pressing on the Memory column, check the Show processes from all users at the bottom, then press on the Memory column and take the screenshot. We'll see if there's not hidden system processes taking more memory. At the time of this picture you were only using 30% of your RAM, which isn't bad, it's quite low.
