Hello everyone,

I've been trying to solve an issue with my video card drivers for a while now. Today I managed to update my drivers, however my video card can't be recognized now. After some research I read that updating windows may solve the issue. I ran into an issue with Windows not updating anymore a while ago, but never paid attention to it (stupid I know). I tried to update today but did not manage it because of an error that made Windows Updater unable to update. After some research I saw that downloading and running SUR may solve the issue. I did this and got the following results:

After googling the results I got for a possible fix for the missing repair files I didn't get a real solution. According to Microsoft manually replacing the missing files should fix the problem, however I can't find the files. Other people had similar problems, however every solution offered to individuals were solution for their specific problem. Anyone know what the problem is and know what I can do to fix it?

Hi,
Try running system file checker in an elevated command prompt:
sfc /scannow
And post back what you observe. To export the logs from system file checker,
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"
Check in your services tab of windows task manager, if BITS is running or not. Also make sure services related to windows update (not on my machine ATM) is also running. If any of them is stopped, right click and select 'start'.
What exact error code does Windows update throw when you try to update it manually?

As well as running SFC can you please let me know what error code you are getting?

Can you please also provide the whole CBS folder? once SFC has finished?

Export CBS folder

Thank you for the elaborate replies to my problem. These are my findings:

Error Code:

First I got a totally different error code than I got this morning so the SUR probably fixed something but not everything. Code 8024001B is the code I'm now getting, according to Microsoft this error happens when you try to update while Windows is already updating. I checked my update history which showed that it had installed a otfix (probably the SUR) which I assume fixed the earlier problem. However it also shows a number of failed updates for Windows Update-agent 7.6.7600.320. I think the new error code is showing because Windows is trying to update the Updater but is failing. When I open the info screen for the failed update I do see the same error code as before: Code 800F081F.

SFC:

Done as requested, in the cmd it said there were no problems. I've uploaded the CBS foler to dropbox as requested: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/jy1llafge7in585/AAAGEfHqIcW-TSWmCp0gmHtPa?dl=0

BITS: Bits is running under services in Task Manager

This is rather interesting actually, and your theory can almost be confirmed from this segment of the CBS log:

Before attempting to track down which WUA file is actually causing this issue, lets try reinstalling this update manually. Please download this update from Here -> run the installer -> restart the PC and try Windows updates again.

If Windows updates still fails please upload C:\Windows\Logs\CBS.log to dropbox along with the WindowsUpdate log (Instructions below)

Windows Update Log
  • Click on the Start button -> Inside the search box copy and paste the following command
    cmd /c copy %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\WindowsUpdate.txt"
  • Please go to your desktop and attach WindowsUpdate.txt to your next post

Hi,
May be this should help:
  • . Visit http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/307546-windows-updates-remove-outdated-updates-windows-7-a.html and clean your temporary files, recycle bin and windows update.
  • . Then, like how you checked BITS, search for 'windows update service' in 'services' tab of task manager.
  • . Stop the service {rightclick on service name - > stop} (you should run taskmanager as administrator, else it will throw error)
  • . Clear all the content within the "datastore" folder, at "c:\windows\softwaredistribution\datastore"
( Please don't delete the folder itself , it may cause issues)..
  • . Then remove all the content within the 'download' folder, at "c:\windows\softwaredistribution\download".. ( Here also don't delete the folder itself ).
  • . Start the 'windows update service', in 'services' tab.
  • . Now visit http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2887535 to download the Windows Update-agent 7.6.7600.320 and install it manually. If it says windows update is already running, then stop the service once again as described above.
What do you observe?
Is windows update functioning okay now?
As of now, do you encounter error with installing any other updates pushed via WU?
(i havent checked the CBS logs while this reply was made)
Edit: I missed your last two exchanges. Sorry :(

I did all the steps you've laid out Nikhil. Cleaned up the files, stopped the services, removed the contents of the folders, restarted the Windows update service and tried to manually install the Windows Update-agent. Again ended up with the same results. Same error code as before, also tried to auto search for updates again but got the same error as before.

When I try to install any other Windows Update it points me to the Windows Updater again and tells me it needs to be updated itself, only to show me the error that it can't be done.

Edit: I accidentally restarted and now it's configuring updates on the starting screen, so fingers crossed that something has worked.

Hi,
How is your machine now after restart?
If you're interested to read, you can check out below post. The logs looks pretty same eventhough the topic has some issues along with this error to deal with, like piracy/ hack (knowingly or unknowingly) to use multiple language packs.

Currently still busy with the update. It's done configuring, but now it says "Cleaning Up, don't turn off the computer" on fthe loading screen. I'll update as soon as it's done.

Configuring is done, but still no improvements. Same errors, and still not able to install the Update agent...

Edit: Don't know if it's important but the last updates it did install were on the 14th of September. These updates were KB2980245 and KB2981580 and some updates affiliated with it.

Do you happen to have any language packs installed or non english keyboard?
Did you checkout the windowsseven forum thread?
Rather than pointing to repair installation of Win 7, I'm short of ideas currently. May be Go The Power has some idea.

I'm guessing I have a Dutch Language pack installed as well, I read through the forum you posted, but it ended up with a reinstall, I'm hoping it candle fixed withou a reinstall as I don't have the CD at hand so won't be a quick fix. (Will be weeks before I can get the CD)

Edit: Would it be possible to create a System Resore Point on another computer and use that to Restore the problem? My brother has the same laptop as me and I don't think he has these problems.

Hi martdiamond,

I'm guessing I have a Dutch Language pack installed as well

Can you please uninstall  that temporarily. You may reinstall  it later.

I dont know how effective is following  steps.

  1. Now redo steps 1 to 6 posted in message #8

  2. Using a elevated command prompt , enter the following
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll

3.Restart your machine.

4.Now, Navigate to C:\Windows\Servicing\Packages and search for '7.6.7600.320' and move all the files listed to a folder on your desktop.

5.Reboot again.

6.Then run the following in a command  prompt :

REG QUERY "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages" /F WUClient-SelfUpdate-Core-UIComp

Whats its result?

7.Now run in an elevated command  prompt ::

DISM /online /remove-package /packagename:WUClient-SelfUpdate-Core-TopLevel~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~7.6.7600.320

then

dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth

dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Would it be possible to create a System Resore Point on another computer and use that to Restore the problem? My brother has the same laptop as me and I don't think he has these problems

No, restore points are internal to each installation and cannot be transfered across machines. You may need to ask your friends if they can lend you a Win 7 home pre installation media. Else call Google for help in creating one of your own (with the windows installation on your brother's laptop).
