Computer was running fine but after last Win update it suddenly will not boot.  No message.  Just blank screen.

Hard drive is SSD and no malware detected when running EMSISOFT emergency scan utility.

Starting computer from Hiren's shows the C: drive with all the data.  Suspect a corrupt boot sector from whatever cause.

Ran bootrec but nothing changed.  bootrec /scanos returned no recognized windows installations

bootred /rebuildbcd failed to find any windows installations so would not rebuild the bcd.

Trying to avoid a clean install, as progs will be lost.

So--am I officially screwed and do I need to do a reinstall?

Well, decided it wasn't worth the hassle. Backed up the personal data and did a factory recovery.  End of story.  Would be nice to know what happened, though.
