Hi, ok, I know i was a moron to run an exe that I obviously shouldn't have trusted, but I have certainly learnt my lesson  . I infected myself yesterday (friday) at 3pm or so, and have had the saddest time ever, ever since. If I hadn't found this site, I think I would still be curled up in a little ball. I've read a few people's logs, and have followed the instructions on the 'do this first' page, which included: Run - cleanmgr incl all temp, temp internet and recycle bin files; ad-aware full system scan, several times til clean; spybot, updated, ran several times til clean, deleting everything; HOUSE CALL AV DIDN'T WORK (i run firefox, apparently i have IE on here too, because it keeps opening randomly); ewido, found, quarantined and deleted lots of stuff (oh my god, my poor computer :flowers: ); mcafee avert stinger, turned off system restore first cos i'm on xp, ran, nothing found, turned system restore back on; THE WINDOWS FIREWALL WHEN TURNED ON DIDN'T LET ME ON THE INTERNET (but it's also likely that i'm just being incompetent, although I hope not) SO I TURNED IT OFF AGAIN (we go through a router for internet); windows updates are already set to happen automatically, although they were set for 3am, and i've changed this now to 3pm, when the computer is far more likely to be on; downloaded and ran HijackThis/, created a log, which I'm posting here.

Other bits that might help work out if I'm clean or not:
-I downloaded a keygen.exe for SPSS 14 from a very dodgy cracks site, it is definitely the source of my problems.
-The first virus I was notified that I had (by Roguescanfix, I think) was 'Trojan.Downloader.obfuscated.a', which was infecting f1c6988.exe, in both /windows and /system32.
'System Doctor' and various other 'antivirus'-looking webpages keep opening in IE (which I didn't even know I had)
-Norton (which is out of date, I've obviously had my computer more than 3 months now) found and deleted: 'dialer saristar', 'adware.purityscan' and 'adware.mainsearch'
-Spybot found and deleted: 'Casino popupstuff', 'comlord', 'coolwwwsearch.badzonemap', 'coolwwwsearch.googlems', 'coolwwwsearch.winres', 'coolwwwsearch', 'doubleclick', 'sexlist', 'virtumonde', 'windows.active.desktop'
-I deleted 'cowabanga by OIN' and 'yazzle by OIN' from add/remove programs
-Norton removed 'adl.exe.tmp' (several times, and later reported that it was 'unable to remove adl.exe.tmp)
-I get a notification fairly often that 'Your current settings prohibit running ActiveX' and then something about 'this page may not display properly'. What I find strange is that it appears even if I have no web browser open. Also, I've been very particular about not allowing ActiveX on this computer, because I heard bad stuff about it. Shortly after this message appears, IE opens at an AV site. This, combined with one of the malwares finding 'key loggers' has made me saddest of all
-ewido micro found 69 infections, said it couldn't remove them all, so I downloaded the full (trial) version and ran it, deleted what it found.
-Delf.Downloader.amb and .something else were found several times at startup (I've done a few).

I hope this is enough information to help me, and I hope someone can help me, let me know if I'm clean, or whether I should try to wipe everything and start over. I'm trying to be pragmatic about this, and if the only way to feel clean and unviolated again is to do that, I will. My biggest concern at the moment is that I'd 'start again', but that some files would be left behind, and I'd still be infected! (As you may be able to tell, I think I'm ok at navigating and using my computer, but the more I find out, the more I realise what an absolute black box the whole thing is! I have over 150,000 files on here - how the HELL can anyone know what they're all doing?!)

If anyone reads this and can help, I will be eternally grateful and wish you life-long sunshine and roses!

Here is my Hijackthis log file:

Hi daisybelle and Welcome to the Bleeping Computer!

Could you also post back an uninstall list for me please,
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file.
  • When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
  • Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad into this topic please.
Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, in the menu, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Post those 2 reports in the next reply please.

Dr web cureit express scan 'done, no viruses found' ( :flowers: )

Dr web cureit full scan log:
nnnnlig.dll;C:\WINDOWS\system32;Trojan.Virtumod;Deleted.;

And i 'healed' something, too.

Does this mean Virtumonde has inveigled itself on my computer forever? Do you think I can be sure that I can get malware-free?

Also, I've seen people mention on bleepingcomputer that you shouldn't have 2 AVs, but I have both Norton and AVG. Is this bad, and should I get rid of Norton? (I saw instructions on how to do that somewhere here.)

THANK-YOU so much! I await further instructions to know whether I need to do more or whether I'm relatively safe now (you are such an ace person for doing this!!)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = prosearching.com

 :flowers: but ewido looks like taking forever to run (40 mins so far, and only 1/3 along the progress bar), so I'm going to let it run overnight now. (it seems wrong to mention such personal information like which side of the planet i'm on... oh well, I'm going to sleep much more happily tonight while ewido does its thang - cheers cretemonster!!!) I'll post the results tomorrow! (sorry, sudden burst of happy energy!!)

Thats definatly a good sign,Id like to check with one more Online Scan and be sure nothing was overlooked.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.

hmm, not sure if i'm infected, or if these files are just being 'held' by norton. these 7 files are being held in a 'backup' folder - should I go in and delete that, or what?

here's the log from kaspersky. About to install other 2 programs now.

Looking Good!

You can remove all the quarantined items in Norton Antivirus.

What I do is open Norton Antivirus and click Reports--> Beside Quarantined Items,Click View Reports.

When the next window opens, remove all quarantined and backup items.

Now,go to C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine and confirm its empty.

Go ahead and Renable System Restore and restart the PC,this will clear out all old nasty restore points and create a nice new fresh clean one for you to fall back on should you ever need it.

Updating Java and Clearing Cache
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
  • It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
  • If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
  • After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 CheckedDownloaded Applets
    Downloaded Applications
    Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
It is suggested that you go and change all your passwords since some of these may have been compromised during the infection.

Read through those 3 little black links in my signature to get some extra ideas about how to avoid this in the future.

Please remember to check your AntiVirus and any Spyware Apps for updates atleast twice a week

Make sure you keep your Windows Operating System up to date by visiting Windows Updates regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs.

If you ever need us again, you know how to find us! :flowers:
