laptop-no video

no video on my hp pavilion  .plug 'vga' to a flat screen and that works..when u stand a bit to side,u can see screen works vagly..this laptop belonged to my d kid,and she is a bit rough on computers..any ideas would be nice..   katesdad

When you say vaguely, I am guessing there is an image but no backlight? Could be the inverter (if this computer has a ccfl backlight), or the backlight itself which would require a new lcd panel. What is the exact model #?
