The techs here will suggest adwcleaner and/or toolbar remover.  However, be sure to follow their instructions to the letter  :)

Thanks for the reply I have also used adwcleaner, I still feel I have some thing on my computer I know I had some back door trojans and some adware and loads of the usual tracking cookies. But I cannot understand where my shortcuts have gone and if I search for a program it never shows a result.

Tweaking.com's Windows Repair (All in One)  -- accept default checkmarks, add #s 26 & 27 [if memory serves me], if not already clicked, checkmark the one to fix icons.

Hello,
Did you run ESET Online scanner?

Check for and disable or remove any unwanted add-ons from your browser:
Go in and disable extensions all or do one at a time to see if there's a culprit there.

Remember most tools need an update prior to running.

You're welcome and have a great day!
