PC (Win 7) running everything incredibly slow

I have an HP Pavilion p7-1235 running Windows 7. I’m not a gamer, and my computer is not overloaded with excessive software. I largely use my desktop computer for word processing, banking, and basic Internet searches. My virus programs are System Mechanic Pro and Malwarebyte Pro.  About 8 months ago, I started having issues with my computer running everything incredibly slow, from opening a program to running the Internet or even moving my mouse across the screen. I noticed that it happened after my computer completed some standard updates. I ran several full scans and found a few minor problems, but the computer still ran incredibly slow. Finally, I restored my computer to an earlier restore point, and my computer sped up.  A few months later, the same problem occurred. Again, I found a few issues and removed them, but the computer still ran slowly. I had to restore it again.  A month later, it happened again, and I went through the same process.  Now every 3-4 weeks the computer slows down considerably, and the only way I can fix it (at least for a few weeks) is to do a restore.  Obviously, I’m missing some virus buried deep in my computer, but System Mechanic Pro and Malwarebyte Pro isn’t finding anything major. What other steps can I take to fix this problem once and for all?

- JRT

- Malwarebytes

- Hitman Pro

 

download and run those 4 programs in that order,

 

after that run msconfig to close down any unwanted programs at startup

I have a big mess now! I downloaded adwcleaner and ran it. Several problems were found. Then I downloaded JRT and ran it. I actually picked up nasty problems with JRT. Now I have ads/videos popping up all over the place. Also, I can no longer run Malwarebytes, which was already installed on my computer and had worked previously. Midway through a scan it either stops scanning by indicating that it's not responding, or it just freezes in the middle of a scan. What do I do now?

after you ran adwcleaner did you click on "clean" to fix the problems?

 

start your computer in safe mode and run virus removal programs from there

I'll jump in this thread since it looks like it got off the wrong foot. jek, System Mechanic Pro and Malwarebytes aren't Antivirus program. System Mechanic Pro is one of these useless "PC Booster" program so I strongly suggest you to uninstall it. Malwarebytes is also an Antimalware, which means that you have no Antivirus installed on your system at the moment. Let's start from scratch.

  • Download MiniToolBox and move it to your Desktop;
  • Execute it by double-clicking on it;
  • Check the "List Installed Programs" checkbox;

  • Click on the Go button;
  • Once the scan is complete, a log will open.

  • Copy/paste (select the Notepad, press Ctrl + A then Ctrl + C to copy, and Ctrl + V to paste) the content of the output log in your next reply;

Mikey11 - Yes, I ran clean after scanning with adwcleaner. I have a new problem...My computer won't run in safe mode! That's never happened before.

 

Aura - I've used System Mechanic Pro for years and really like it. I find a number of its features quite useful. The Pro version includes System Shield Antivirus and Anti-Spyware. I'm extremely cautious about downloading, so I've only gotten three viruses on all the computers I've had over the last few decades. That makes me very inexperienced when it comes to cleaning out viruses, so I'll gladly take your advise. I downloaded MiniToolBox (which makes me nervous). Here's the info you requested:

You can uninstall Adobe Reader since the version you have is outdated. Also, you could uninstall Google Chrome and install the official 64-bits version of it as it'll run better on Windows 64-bits and it'll use far less resources. You can find the download on the official Google Chrome download page, then clicking on Other Platforms and select Windows 7/8 64-bits. As for the slow down, if you are indeed infected with a malware, doing a System Restore won't help you nor it is recommended as it can make the situation worse than it already is.

Follow the instructions below to check for available Windows Updates and install them:
  • Click on the Windows Start Menu and select Control Panel;
  • From there, click on System and Security and select Windows Updates;
  • Click on the Check for updates button in the left-pane;
  • Wait for the scan to complete and see which updates are found, Recommended Updates and Recommended Updates (or Optional Updates);
  • Click on X Important Updates (X being the number of updates being found) and make sure that they are all checked;
  • Install every Important Updates found and restart your computer once it's done;
