HP 2000-2a20NR laptop. Purchased in August 2012.

I'm 99.9% sure it is the fan but I do want confirmation.

When it is not making any noises the fan does spin.

Not sure when this started but every once in while I hear a noise and I wondering if it is the fan.

The noise is coming from the bottom of the laptop. Photo of the bottom of my laptop, area of noise circled in red.
Looking at picture of the bottom of the laptop in the user manual, the fan seems to be located there or close to it.

It isn't an all the time noise. It can happen at any time.

For good measure here is the sound. It's actually a bit louder than it is in the video.

Just as I started to compose this post a different noise and after this one stopped I can't tell if the fan is spinning or not.

Absolutely sounds like fan bearing noise, which commonly has that characteristic of coming and going, and sounding different at times.

Thank you for confirming that for me.

And for more confirmation:

I just booted up the laptop and was greeted with a screen that told me "the system has detected that a cooling fan is not operating properly".

I see a new laptop fan in the near future.

I have found the replacement part on the HP website.
$47.08 plus shipping.

*wondering if my cousin who works at HP can get me a lower price*

I want to research what else is out the price wise. Anybody got suggestions for trustworthy sites in the United States?

I will order it myself and take the laptop to my tech to do the actual replacing.

The laptop will stay turned off until the fan is replaced. I will not be able to order it until next week.

Once again thank you for your input, Platypus.

Update: I ordered the fan from HP on Feb. 10th.
It was delivered early on Feb. 16.

Fan and laptop were taken to my tech.
I got the laptop back Tuesday afternoon and it is working perfectly.
