Check Internet Explorer configuration for automatic detection settings. Go to Control Panel - Internet Options - Connections - Settings (use the correct one for either dialup or LAN). Look for the box that says Automatically Detect Settings. Make sure that box is NOT checked. The other thing to do is ensure that JAVA script is installed. Go to http://java.sun.com and install the free Java Software. Follow the instructions. P.S. on all free downloads, always scroll to the bottom of the page to make sure all boxes are either checked or unchecked as applicable that may also install some toolbar along with it. Additionally, if a certain website will not work because JAVA script is not installed, it will probably not work in Mozilla or Opera either.

My dad's computer developed the same problem a few days ago and I am stumped. He has IM, but can't access the internet from any browser (IE6, Firefox, MSN Explorer), nor can he receive or send email (OE). I've checked all his internet and network settings. He installed a new NIC, the cable company replaced his external modem. When he could get onto the net, it just quit after a minute or two for a couple of days, and now he has no internet whatsoever. His HP desktop is only 2 years old, Windows XP Home. He doesn't do porn or visit questionable sites, he and mom do email and banking and expedia, for the most part.

He ran system restore and set it to a date about a week before the problem started, but that didn't help. We tried disabling his firewall, but no improvement. Antivirus expired about 2 weeks ago, so no new signatures since then, but he kept the program running. All his programs work fine, just cannot connect to the net. He's considering replacing the computer, but this seems a bit extreme.

Any suggestions or thoughts?
