I am stumped on this one.
A user's computer had been generating pop-ups for an unknown amount of time.
I restored the computer (Windows 7 Pro 64-bit) back to its earliest restore point (December 24) and the pop-ups were still there.
I uninstalled SnipSmart and PC Protect Tools and then ran MalwareBytes which found and removed 145 objects including SanBreel, Storm WAtch, SearchProtect, SnipSmart and RocketTab
Now there are no longer pop-ups in Internet Explorer, but some links will generate a blank tab in IE or not open up a new window. When comparing the behaviour of these links on a different computer it seems some of these links that generate blank tabs should be opening a new window, or a new tab. If I refresh the blank tab, nothing happens, but if I copy and paste the same link into a new tab it works fine.
Sometimes an action that would normally spawn a new window does nothing.
If I open and close Internet Explorer without doing anything (open and close) all iexplere process in Task Manager disappear.
If follow a link or go to a different webpage or site, there will still be two or more instances of iexplorer running after I close Internet Explorer.
I have run TDSSKILLER
I have run RogueKiller
Neither of which found any infection or suspicious files, services, processes or registry entries
I have reset IE explorer
I have installed IE11
I have uninstalled IE11
I think I have removed the infection that was on the computer, but it has left Internet Explorer a mess.
Does anybody have an idea of how to restore/fix Internet Explorer to resolve the issue.
Unfortunately we need Internet Explorer as some critical functions require it.
