Using a retail windows 7 ultimate 64 on my gaming PC. Google as my default search engine and start page today I noticed the black bar at the top of the google homepage that was not there before today.

So I checked my setting in IE 11 and the connections tab in settings shows "some settings are managed by your system administrator" and a proxy server set to 127.0.0.1 port 8080. All search results are returned in a basic two line format with a small image justifying to the left. It was not like that yesterday.

Visually I can see that my IE start page (google) and the returned results have changed to a crude looking layout.

I attempted to reset the browser and now have about:blank as my start page, Connections tab still shows a proxy but I cant change it due to the managed by admin setting.

I have had malwarebytes pro installed from build date. Scanning the PC using a custom full scan shows NOTHING!

I installed google chrome and the 1st search results page entered displayed correctly, all subsequent searches have the same crude page setup my ie 11 has. Resetting chrome has no effect.

Downloaded hitman pro from bleepingcomputer and booted it to be greeted with "windows cannot verify digital signature of winload.exe" so I ran sfc /scannow with no problems found result

I happen to have two identical W7 64 installs on this PC on differing SSD's and selecting the rarely used second OS with hitman is fine, it scans it without issue. IE and my google start page are not effected on this build and search results displayed are formatted as expected.. No proxy setting are set and all seems to be fine.

At this stage I thought it might be a rootkit, running TDSS killer from bleeping revealed nothing, mbam anti rootkit also showed clean results.

Now I'm at a loss, after lurking and learning from bleepingcomputer for years I now find myself in need of help...

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.
Do NOT use spoilers.
Do NOT edit your reply to post additional logs. Create new reply. I'll not get any email notifications about edits so I won't know you posted something new.

Ran TFC and JRT this morning.

End of JRT log
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
adwcleaner didn't find anything. No log to post.
Sophos refused to update this evening after returning from work.. Stated no internet connection.
Running JRT again allowed me to change the IE proxy settings long enough to connect / update / scan / results were
"Your computer is clean"
"Number of infections found: 0"
While Sophos was scanning I did a little research and found some registry info relating to the same stubborn proxy and being unable to change setting in the IE connection tab.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\services\NlaSvc\Parameters\Internet\ManualProxies
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\services\NlaSvc\Parameters\Internet\ManualProxies
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections
Editing the above entries appears to have removed the proxy for now.
At this moment I'm wondering how this happened and is my system clean. Lucky I only use it for gaming.
Instead of Sophos...
Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner
  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Click on "Run ESET Online Scanner" button.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
OK, ran the ESET online scanner and the results were
0 infected files
0 cleaned files
No list to push so can't post the log, just gave me an option to uninstall on exit.
All my previous registry edits were undone the following day and am back to square one.. Started to populate my other drive for gaming as my hopes of salvaging this build are waning.. Still willing to continue with it tho..
Reset your router...
Turn the computer off.
On your router, you'll find a pinhole marked "Reset".
Keep pushing the hole, using a pencil, or a paperclip until all lights briefly come off and on.
NOTE. Simple router disconnecting from a power source will NOT do.
Restart computer.
NOTE. You may need to re-check your router security settings, as described HERE
Then reset IE settings again.
Pin reset the router, had no effect on the browser and had to run JRT to enable a browser reset. Without running JRT it's impossible to remove the proxy server settings from IE. If I reset it without running JRT it does nothing. Rebooted after reset and the proxy is back with "some settings are managed by your system administrator" in the connections tab.
None of the other PC's in the house are effected but this one OS..
Well, let's employ more advanced tools.
Please follow the instructions in THIS GUIDE starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.
Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it HERE. Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.
If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.
It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.
If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.
