.

A friend sent me a copy of a SPAM e-mail the friend had received with myself as the sender, not an uncommon problem to have one's e-mail address used in such a way - but what terrified me was that the recipients in the CC field were taken from a private document in my Vista-32 computer. I started looking around and that's when I learned about these RATs. (Can't say for sure a RAT is what I have, but it's my best speculation; perhaps you could chime in on that point.)

There was very little information that I could find about the topic, and what I'd like to know is (as I read somewhere) there is no way of knowing whether these stealthy and invisible infiltrations have been obliterated by the anti-malware programs (culminating with the advice to basically take the drastic step of formatting the hard drive and starting anew). It does make sense, since these nefarious RATs are designed not to be seen. Is that the case? (That is, is there a good success rate for the anti-malware programs, or is it just a roll of the dice?)

I did use my already-installed copy of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and that found a good number of PUPs. I searched for similar topics on this board, and made use of what

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/532133/i-think-ive-been-hacked/?hl=%2Brat#entry3407762 reported. I followed the recommendations (bypassing the first) and downloaded and applied "TDSSKiller" and "AdwCleaner"; neither found anything to speak of, and I went on to the third suggestion, "Junkware Removal Tool"... which turned out to be a horrible mistake.

(Just went ahead and removed things without my approval; I felt emboldened by the experience of the first two programs I used, and so took it for granted that Junkware Removal Tool would extend the same polite courtesy of asking first. There were two programs that I value, Orbit Downloader and Hotspot Shield, and Junkware Removal Tool cleaned them out.... and maybe other things, as well. Today has been a really rotten day...)

At any rate, I am not a big techie, and I would appreciate words of wisdom regarding this (probably) RATty problem of mine. Thank you.

.

Thank you so much for your patient and detailed reply, BC Advisor; this is extremely kind of you.

I've visited technical threads as these with the endless logs posted, and I've thought: How... could... anyone... make... sense of all that? And here you are going to be dealing with several logs. (You are very brave.)

I certainly will follow through, and I take comfort in that you do have hope, and that such programs can actually catch the tricky culprit.

Naturally, your help in getting to the bottom of this takes priority. If you have patience with me, however, I would also like to bother you on revelations regarding what these hackers are capable of. This article was one of the few revealing ones I have found, and it served as an eye-opener: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/internet-security/11153381/How-hackers-took-over-my-computer.html

What I'd greatly appreciate learning, at least in general, what are the limits that these infiltrators are capable of. They can actually read and download anything on one's computer? It boggles my mind, because I don't understand how they can take a document and open it up, presumably while you are on the Internet.

To illustrate, I've had occasions where a tech-help rep would ask permission to come into my computer, and you can see the way they control the mouse, hovering the cursor around. You need that action to open up directories and go here and there. I don't understand how it would be possible for a hacker to cruise around like that while one is online and observing the screen.

If I get a better idea of this unknown world, it would be very helpful, because if you provide the idea they can do pretty much anything (and, man... how could they), that's an argument for having a second computer which carries one's private information, that never goes online. (Storing the private stuff on an external drive would not do, because once you hook up the drive to use on your Internet-connected computer, presumably they can get that, too... unless one goes offline. That's why I would appreciate getting at least a general idea of what they can and cannot do. In reality, however, there are occasions where you have to fill in usernames and passwords, so the second computer really is not a solution.)

Thank you again.

.

All right... here we go.

Yikes. I see the Anti-Rootkit program detected a "Sirefef" trojan... let me additionally thank you for getting rid of that! (From my minimal read, I gather that would not be a "RAT" which I believe is my problem.... but good riddance.)

I would like to emphasize my appreciation for your very kind attention; thank you as well for not leaving anything to chance in your step-by-step explanation, which was very handy for the dimwits among us.

I'm also throwing in the "Junkware Removal" report that I had saved from a couple of days ago, starting things off:

Yeah, you're infected with ZeroAccess rootkit.

That will require elevated help.

Please follow the instructions in THIS GUIDE starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it HERE. Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

Wow. Thank you. (Ditto for the quick response.)

I'm going to follow your instruction, of course; you've been very kind, and so extremely helpful.

I looked into this Zeroaccess thing a bit, and would you mind if I get your opinion? Just to see if I can get rid of this thing lickety-split (I see there could be a delay in days -- gee, the first "Zeroaccess" post in the thread is a month-and-a-half old, and still ongoing -- with what you have suggested; I am going to do so in any event), do you think the action proposed in the link below would be worthwhile?

http://malwaretips.com/blogs/remove-zeroaccess-rootkit/

It's just that I'm nervous, and what's up there sounded straightforward and not too complicated. What do you think?

In addition:

You have no doubt given your eye to the post I wrote before my last giant one with the logs, and if you choose not to respond, I'd certainly understand. But now I'm dying to know even more; from what I was able to determine, this terrible thing installs payloads and whatnot, but how is it possible that the e-mail addresses from a document could be accessed? (Assuming it was Zeroaccess that was the culprit, maybe there was something else; I am looking at what this trojan does under the "Aggressive ZeroAccess Rootkit Virus" heading of this page, and there is nothing that says it is capable of doing what has happened with me.)

I want to learn about this basic fundamental ... if you don't have the time or desire to give at least a quick two cents, perhaps... and maybe you can give another eye to that previous post of mine (in short, what I'm after is how deep is it possible for a hacker to infiltrate one's computer, in terms of controlling the information)... there is a link or two you can guide me to.

I gave it a few days, but I now believe your non-response will be my answer. Thank you very much, BC Advisor, I appreciated your help. I have posted my thread in the "Elevated Help" section, as you advised.
