Hi all. I've followed all the proper protocal, and I just need someone to look over my HJT log and let me know that my comp is clean. I picked up a Trojan last night and have been working all to fix the issue, and want to make sure I'm finally done. Thank you.

Hi JSchec and welcome to the Bleeping Computer forums. My name is Whisperer and I will be helping you with your log. Although I am experienced with computers, I am currently a Trainee in Malware removal and, as such, ALL of my replies will be vetted by malware experts. Please accept our apologies for the delay.

Please right-click on the Desktop and select New then Folder , rename this HJT and move your HijackThis.exe into it, this is because HijackThis makes backups of any changes that we may make in the same place as the executable file.

I can see no obvious Firewall installed so if you are relying on the Microsoft supplied one then I suggest that you install another – the MS firewall is a one-way device, meaning that any malware already installed on your computer can send out its information with no restrictions. If I am right then I can not stress too much how important this is in your protection against malware. There are many paid and free versions available for your use but in the interim I would suggest that you install the following free programIf I have missed your firewall then please disregard, either way I will get back to you as soon as I have finished with your log and my response has been approved.

GT

Thanks Whisperer. I have Prevx1 as a firewall. I'd never heard of it, and if Zone Alarm is better, please let me know and I'll change it out. As of that last post, I think I was able to remove everything. Though I still get a trojan alert on my Kaspersky Anti-Virus when it scans my computer. I'm posting my most recent hijackthis log, and let me know if I've got it all fixed. Also, can you tell me how to create a new system restore point? Whenever I reinstate it, I get flagged for the trojan I was infected with. Thanks, and I appreciate all the help.

EDIT: I have been doing a bit more research on Prevx1 and more informed opinion than I give it a firm thumbs down. Until I get clearance from my mentors, I suggest that you install the ZoneAlarm firewall that I posted earlier and rid yourself of Prevx1, that will solve the problem of the two anti-virus programs as well.

Hi JSchec,
  • Your HijackThis log is showing clean but I am concerned about two things, the first of these is that you appear to have two anti-virus applications running – Kaspersky and Prevx1, the second cause for concern is the Kaspersky Trojan report.
  • If you do have two anti-virus programs running then you must stop one of them as they could interfere with each other. If you are a paid-up subscriber to Kaspersky then that is the one that I recommend retaining, otherwise the choice is yours. It may well be that the Kaspersky Trojan is related to the double anti-virus situation, either way would you please give me as much information as you can about the Trojan especially its reported location.
  • Your Java installation is out of date as the current release is Update 7.
    • Please go to this link to update your Java.
    • Finally use Add or Remove programs to remove all earlier versions of Java
  • You also have a couple of resource hogs but we will deal with the minutiae later
  • In answer to your System Restore query
    • Select the Start button and from the available options
    • Right-click the My Computer option and select Properties.
    • Click on the System Restore tab.
    • Check the box against Turn off System Restore on all drives. Click OK
    • Click Yes to confirm, then restart the computer
    • After the restart, re-enable System Restore by following steps a-c, but in step c, click to clear the Turn off System Restore on all drives. check box.

Okay, did all the steps you told me to do. No more prevx1, kept Kas for right now. Downloading zone alarm as I type. Here is the info from Kaspersky's log about the trojan. I think the last two are the most recent ones I was most worried about, but they haven't come up since. Let me know what to do with the resource hogs :-D Again, thanks for all the help.

Hi JSchec,

Thanks for the information on the Kaspersky actions. We will be cleaning the Temp files shortly, the fourth one is the system restore copy of the third, again we will be reseting that shortly.

Please be so good as to post an up-to-date HijackThis log so that we may confirm its cleanliness.

Please add any information on how the computer is behaving.

Hi JSchec,
  • You are showing a clean log, just one outstanding query and a few optional points for you to consider before the final phase.

Only thing I experienced was a error message when i restarted my comp

    • The query concerns your start-up error, what type of error is it, is it a one-off or one that occurs quite frequently, can you remember the actual message? Please give as much information as you can as it may be that it requires further investigation.

      Optional Points
    • InCD has a reputation for producing copy that can only be read in a similar CDROM, this is of particular significance if you are making backups using InCD. Nero is fine.
    • QuickTime is a bit of a resource hog and this entry could easily be fixed in HijackThis

      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

The next one is a personal point
    • Logitech Desktop Manager can also be a resource hog, I use Google's equivalent
  • To ensure that you have got rid of anything in Temp folders, please download CCleaner
    • Select the Download Latest Version link (top of green column) and save to your desktop
    • Right-click the ccsetup127.exe file on your desktop and select Open
    • Follow the on-screen instructions through to the Install Options page. I suggest you only retain the following 2 options
      • Add Desktop Shortcut
      • Automatically check for updates etc…
    • Click Install

      To setup CCleaner
    • Click on the CCleaner icon on your desktop.
    • From the menu on the left select Options
    • Now select Advanced. On the right remove the check against Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
    • Select Cookies. When CCleaner is run it will remove all of the cookies in the left window; if there are cookies that you wish to retain then select them and transfer them to the right window. Multiple selections can be made by holding down the Ctrl key before selecting.
    • Select Cleaner from the left menu and the Windows tab
      • Under Internet Explorer place ticks in all but the last box
      • Under Windows Explorer tick the last two only
      • Under System tick all boxes
      • There is no need to tick anything under Advanced
    • From the menu on the left click on Analyze
    • When the analysis is complete, click on Run Cleaner and OK at the next screen.
    • Close CCleaner
  • Next to make sure that any files in a System Restore point can not reinfect your computer we will remove all old system restore points.
    • Select the Start button and from the available options
    • Right-click the My Computer option and select Properties.
    • Click on the System Restore tab.
    • Check the box against Turn off System Restore on all drives. Click OK
    • Click Yes to confirm, then restart the computer
    • After the restart, re-enable System Restore by following steps a-c, but in step c, click to clear the Turn off System Restore on all drives. check box.
  • Finally, HijackThis makes backups of all corrections made in a sub-folder of your HJT folder called Backups. Please navigate to this Backups folder and delete the contents
Preventative measures
  • I would suggest that you install the following 3 free programs, keep these updated as they are background tools
    • SpywareBlaster - Excellent prevention tool to keep Malware from installing on your system.
    • SpywareGuard provides a shield against infection
    • IE-SpyAd puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. A tutorial is available here
  • Windows Updates – It is very important to ensure that Internet Explorer and Windows are kept up to date with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft.
  • On a similar vein do ensure that all of your Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware software are also kept up to date. Retain your AdAware and Spybot, update and run at regular intervals.
  • Finally you appear to have an ability for cleaning computers, why not follow the link in my signature or enrol here to become one of the growing army against malware
Best wishes and Safe Surfing

Hi jSchec,

There is not much more left in your log that will improve speed as we got rid of the worst of them last time. I note that you have retained InCD and Logitech Desktop Manager, this last one is probably the current worst resource hog. The only other one that I would remove is

O8 - Extra context menu item: E&xport to Microsoft Excel - res://C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~4\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE/3000

There are several ways to speed up a PC: more memory, faster hard disk, faster processor, etc; but these are irrelevant if the software is not 'playing ball'. Installing monster bloatware like AOL and Norton/Symantec does not help at all.

Similarly, having umpteen programs constantly checking for updates does not increase speed either, luckily you do not. Wherever possible go for manual updates. Microsoft automatic updates are possibly the notable exception excepting that you should still retain control by manually installing the updates themselves.

Running CHKDSK /F and DEFRAG regularly will make things run smoother (Always keep at least 15% free on your harddisk) Run the cCleaner program, whenever you wish, Ewido if you suspect anything and AdAware and Spybot on a weekly basis – all after checking for updated databases.

C:\Program Files\AIM\aim.exe is an element of AOL that is a source for the hackers and malware to exploit. Try Trillian instead as it carries no adware. Download Trillian here, you will be able to use it with all the common chat links as though you were actually using them.

For ie-Spyad try [url=http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm#IESPYAD] this link . Scroll down to the first table and use the IE-SPYAD.EXE file, you should not need ie-spyad2.

Best wishes
GT
