So lately I've been having issues with my computer such as freezing a lot, and lots of disc, atapi, cdrom errors in event viewer. I scanned the hard drive multiple times with data lifeguard(western digital) and it never found anything wrong. This has been going on for a while, like maybe a year, but changing the sata cable, or the sata port seemed to work for a while. However, lately it's gotten worse, and nothing seemed to work like before. I'm thinking maybe it's the motherboard, but I have a second hard drive with windows on it, and it seems to be working fine, typing this on that install.

So before I gave up and bought a new motherboard, I decided to try a Windows repair as that version had been on there for probably 2-3 years without reformatting and reinstalling. So I did the repair, and it restarts and gets to the Windows logo screen, and then it BSOD's.

The error I'm getting is "Page fault in nonpaged area" and the code is 0x00000050, 0xfffff80001600000, 0x000000000000000, 0xfffffadf8d2bb779, 0x0000000000000000.

I can get it to boot to safe mode, but once it gets to when it would load the desktop, it says "Windows setup cannot run in safe mode. Windows will reset now".

A couple things to point out. At first, I was getting errors for missing ntoskrnl.exe when trying to boot, so I used the recovery console to rebuild the installation, and chkdsk /r, which seemed to fix that problem. Also, when both of my hard drives are plugged in, I don't get the boot select option for both of my Windows installs, it just automatically loads my 2nd Windows install, but if I unplug my 2nd hard drive, then I get the boot selection screen, but it still gives me the BSOD mentioned above, when loading my 1st install.

For the record, I am using Windows Xp 64bit, and my build is as follows...

Msi 890fxa-gd70

AMD Phenom II x6 1100T

MSI R5770 Hawk GPU

2x4gb G.SKill Ripjaws X DDR3-1600

Any other information needed, please ask, and any help is appreciated.

I'm a little confused. I can't get into my main windows install on my 1st hard drive, and can only get into my 2nd windows install on my second hard drive, which is a different version.

I just want to make sure I'm supposed to be doing this on the 2nd hard drive/windows install before doing that.

I think the problem has to do with the fact that my Windows Xp 64bit cd only has SP1 on it. I tried to slipstream SP2, but on the last file I get an error message "amd64\update\update.exe is not a valid win32 application." Is there any way around this, or any way someone could slipstream SP2 into my files and send it back to me?

I've seen this message before with a repair install over an active rootkit infection.

Please back up your data before doing anything else.

If you can, delete all partitions on the problem drive (not just reformat) or zero it with the dlg tools - make sure to disconnect your second drive before you do this to avoid any potential issues.

Install Windows again (with the second drive still disconnected) and let us know what happens.

Do you know how to use the Windows recovery console? You may have to use it to edit the boot menu so your dual boot will work.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Are you talking about the error "amd64\update\update.exe is not a valid win32 application."? Apparently that is because my 2nd hard drive with Windows is only 32bit, that's why I'm getting that error.

If you mean the page fault BSOD, I believe it has to do with my 64bit Windows CD only had SP1 on it, and that is why I wanted to slipstream SP2 on my 64bit cd and try the Windows repair again. I do not want to format at all, I have a lot of games installed, and it just plain takes a hell of a lot of time to get all my drivers and updates installed to have this back to normal. If I was going to format, then I would be doing it with a new computer build. If I could get the slipstream of SP2 to work, and it still doesn't work, then I would consider formatting, but that's only a last resort.

If you want to slipstream sp2 you'll need a 64-bit machine.

Try using nlite and integrate the nvidia chipset drivers too, that might be the cause of your problem.

Do you have 4gb of ram? try running with 2gb or less and see if it boots without the bluescreen. I've seen that before with some chipset drivers.

Yeah I was looking at that nlite, maybe I'll give that a shot. And I have 8gb, 2x4, but I only have 1 stick in right now. For some reason, even with both sticks in, the bios only shows 4gb of physical memory, don't know why.

EDIT: Would I be able to slipstream SP2 in Windows 7 64bit, or does it have to be XP 64bit? If it doesn't matter, I'll just go to my brothers house and use his computer with Windows 7 64bit and do it there.

See if you can get a 1 or 2gb stick of ram temporarily. if you can't, try the slipstream and nvidia chipset driver integration.

If anyone has 64bit XP, would you be willing to slipstream service pack 2 into my files? I uploaded the contents on the cd onto mediafire, just needs to be downloaded, add SP2 to it, and re-upload it to mediafire.

Seems to me that the simplest solution is to reinstall, then properly update Windows for all critical updates.

It would be the simplest, but I have a lot of games and programs that I didn't want to have to reinstall again. Will takes days to get it back to normal again. I still think its a hardware problem though since I am still having issues on my other Windows boot on my other hard drive (rules out a hard drive problem, even though I scanned it multiple times.) Like the other day, I had this eventvwr error..

"The device 'TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S223Q' (IDE\CdRomTSSTcorp_CDDVDW_SH-S223Q________________SB03____\5&19d8e1b3&0&0.1.0) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal."

This happened after a bunch of cdrom and atapi errors in eventvwr, like

"The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort2, did not respond within the timeout period."

"The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort2, is not ready for access yet."

"The driver detected a controller error on \Device\CdRom0."

I'm probably just gonna get a new motherboard, processor and video card (ram is newer, less than a year old, and I tested the power supply with a multimeter, it's also good). Trying to save a little money, that's why I'm not going to replace everything.

Well..;when things go wrong, users want to think that it's very simple to determine if it's a hardware problem...a malware problem...or an O/S problem.  IMO, the key is to look for evidence that supports whatever premise you come up with.  Otherwise, a user is apt to waste time and money trying to guess at a solution...without any guarantee that guessing will lead to knowledge.

A clean install is, IMO, the most basic step in minimizing random guessing as to what the problems may be.

I just believe it's a hardware problem because I am having the same exact problems on 2 different Windows installs, on 2 separate hard drives. Not to mention how the bios only shows 4gb physical memory, when I have 2 sticks of 4gb, in any slot, still shows the same thing. I've tried, and currently, run only 1 stick, but both sticks work as singles, so I doubt that is the problem either.

Pretty much all of the hardware is over 3 years old anyways, not exactly current. This just gives me a way to build something newer that will last a few years, and be more current.
