a friend of mine has a windows 8 laptop but needs windws 7 for some work stuff,if i install windows 7 on a virtual machine on his windows 8 laptop will it work ok

Yes, it will, but you would need a decent amount of memory for it to work well. How much RAM does the laptop have?

Also, has your friend tried changing the compatibility settings for the program and set it to Windows 7 to see if it works?

I have Windows 8.1 but I need to run some DOS programs.

 

DOSBox does not support printing so I run XP (which supports DOS) in a virtual machine on Oracle Virtualbox https://www.virtualbox.org/ (because it's the first VM I tried that worked), so yes, it should work.
