I just built a new computer and loaded windows 8. I immediately did all updates and then went to windows 8.1. Now I'm trying to tranfer my music from my external hard drive and each time I try I get bsod with driver irql not less or equal(Wdf01000.sys). Windows then restarts I tried google and found some basic info about drivers and registry. Iv made sure all my drivers are updated and the registry is clean. I can launch installers and copy small files but nothing more. I tried another hard drive and another usb port. The same result each time.I don't know how to fix this problem and Microsoft wants to charge me $200 to help. I have quite a bit of computer knowledge but am stumped on this issue.I need access to my large files for work. Any info on how to fix this problem would be awesome. Thx

Computer Specs-
Azza Csaz-XT1 Black Case
Asrock 990Fx Extream 9 MB
Amd Fx 9590 Cpu
Corsair Hydro Series H60 Cpu Water Cooler
Power Color Radeon Hd 5450 Gpu
Geil Evo Veloce series 1600 32Gb Ram
Pioneer Combo Blueray+Cd/DVD OD
Pioneer Cd+DVD Combo OD
Antec 750w 80+ bronze Psu
Wd Black 1Tb Hdd
Wd Blue 600Gb Hdd

When they arrive there's going to be 3 Msi Gtx970's in Sli, 5 Wd Red 4Tb Hdd's in Raid 6 and a custom Water cooling system. Depending on performance I might get 32gbs of 2400 ddr3 ram and a 1300w gold psu.

Hi-

The specs you eave are only minor when you could post a snapshot with Speccy for more system details -
How to Publish a snapshot with Speccy <<-- Full Directions Here (only Copy / Paste the link)

We do need the (any) actual DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

Thanks -

Okay that was a second drive i installed in the computer. There isnt anything on it and i wasnt even using it. Since the drives 6 years old ill just recycle it. I dont see the point in keeping a drive thats no longer reliable. As for the Dmp info:

Okay that was a second drive i installed in the computer.

No problem, but I thought it may be related (with 3 internal + 1 external drive) . It would be a good idea to unplug it, as it may reflect bad readings .....

This is also important as it shows the BSODs over several days and gives us areas to chase down.

I can go over them but I will not have an answer for about 8 hours -

If someone else posts back first, please follow their advice ......

Thank You -

Okay. I really appreciate your help. I actually have 2 internal and 2 external. The 2 and 3 tb drives are external. The 600Gb and 1Tb are internal drives. I'll try anything someone recommends if it can help. I don't mind waiting. I understand somethings can take a while.

Just got 15 minutes as I have been called out to help someone for a while (need to make a dollar).

I know this is now running Windows 8, but you did not say where the earlier (external drive) files are from (XP / Vista / Win7/ Win8) or "random" collections ....

Now I'm trying to tranfer my music from my external hard drive and each time I try I get bsod with driver irql not less or equal(Wdf01000.sys)

Hi there.  From looking around the web this could be caused by a bad or corrupted system file.

This is NON-INVASIVE so it should not hurt anything on your computer.

Put in your windows disk

and

Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, do the following as your appropriate:
Windows 8.1 or Windows 8

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then click Search. Type Command Prompt in the Search box, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow

At the prompt type sfc /scannow

Then press the Enter key

and let it run post back your results and see if that works

The music and just about all my external data are from a collection of sources. Some are from xp,vista,7,8, and even linux. Its all the basic format thought. mp3, mp4,.exe. Iv never had a problem with transferring those files from my hdd because of the fact they were once on a different os. If this is the cause its going to be a problem. As i said i need all my files for work and there isnt a way i can reget the files. As for the theory of a bad system file. I just installed this os. When i first put Windows 8.1 on and had this problem i tried rebooting into a windows 8 usb and reloading the os. When i did this i formatted all internal drives and started from scratch. Then when i tried transferring my files it happened again. Its not just my music, its anything i try to transfer. Cmd just finished.

Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations.

I'm fairly certain that the os is in a completely normal state. and is not the cause. From the data i was able to collect i believe that the problem is a usb specific problem whether it be drivers or a bad Mother Board. I just don't have much knowledge in this area of computers. I even thought it could be a unstable bios version and tried updating it. Its already the most recent version. I depending on what we find or (cant) find will try downloading the newest  version from the actual site and reflashing it myself with a usb. The board has a internet flash option to check and apply any updates from the web automatically. From what i could dig up its possible that my ram could be faulty, bad drivers, registry errors, or a virus of some kind. I made sure my registry is good. I tested my ram from memtest86 and had no failures. I scanned my External and internal drives for a virus and came back clean.I installed all current drivers. Once i discovered that nothing i tried worked and that i was stumped, tried calling microsoft and they wanted $200 just to trouble shoot. Thats crazy. I remembered from a tech meeting i had to attend for work that 1 of the attendees was using this site because of the helpful and reliable people on it. Thats when i tried coming here for help because im perfectly well aware that there are people who know far more about computers than me and  could possible help me.

I read an article that suggests NIS could be causing this.  Of course I don't suggest you do not use your security suite of choice.  But for trouble shooting purposes only maybe you could temporarily uninstall it/reboot and see if the issue persists?

Be sure then to reinstall it or check out Semantec support if it does turn out to be the problem.  Of course posting back here would be great.

I actually read that somewhere and totally forgot about it. Yes I'll try uninstalling Norton and trying again. Post back soon.
