Cloned old HDD 320GB(Hitachi) to a larger 500GB Seagate drive on an older Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. Used Seagate's instruction's and made bootable disk to clone drive Everything fine with cloned drive except Windows Update will not work. Updates states that the service in not running, although in Services It is set to Automatic(delayed start). Updated all drivers from Dell, checked at Intel and Seagate for any drivers or updates<nothing there. I even reran Windows Genuine Activation Again. Nothing has worked yet. Inspiron has Intel T6400 Processor, 849F MOBO, and Vista SP2. Any help appreciated.

Hi,

If you used Seagate Diskwizard to clone the old HDD to the new one the result it's a exact copy, the problem with Windows Update most likely already existed on the old HDD.

Please post the following two logs.

9OoOKtajgSmoOAS611kOcmffOCc4Sw.png Minitoolbox log

Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.
Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options:

  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices (select Only Problems)
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
  • List Minidump Files
  • List Restore Points

Click on Go.

Post the resulting log in your next reply.

Let's check some windows critical services...

9OoOKtajgSmoOAS611kOcmffOCc4Sw.png Farbar Service Scanner (FSS)

Download Farbar Service Scanner and save the file to the Desktop.

  • Run FSS
  • Check all the options
  • click Scan

Post the generated log in your reply.

Hi, thanks. I did swap the HDDs and the old one worked with Win Update and Win Defender, looks like that is shut down on the cloned drive also. Below are the logs you asked for.

Hi .. i tried to help someone else yesterday with this problem and they were too afraid to try the update utility that it appears is required for new hard drives see the article here for more information.

Hope this helps.  By all means though you should make sure important files are backed up.

Let us know if this helps and if you want to continue to let Sleepydude help you with this I understand fully

Thanks for the suggestion I will take that in consideration. I have done lots of HDD cloning with AF drives and never found a problem like the one described...

Hi,

The log show an error reading a file related to windows update and that could explain the problem also it means something went wrong during the copy...

My suggestion is to check the new Seagate HDD using the Seagate tool available here, install the tool and run the quick and full diagnostic scan. Let us know if the drive passes both tests.

Hi, thanks a ton for the leads. I did go to Intel and was able to download and install the Intel Detection Tool, but it found nothing, crazy. The same thing with Seagate's website. I dug some more and found a Hotfix for this problem for Windows Vista, but the trick was to install the Hotfix to the old Source Drive First. I them recloned (using Seagate's Disk Tools) the new HDD after I used Disk Part from command line and reinitialized and reformatted. It worked, everything working, Update Win Defender, Win Firewall etc. Now we know another way to fix this stubborn problem.
Once again Thank You, Sleepy

Hi,

I'm glad you found a solution yourself. :thumbup2:

Can you post a link for the Hotfix you use?

FYI for others reading this topic...

Indeed if you replaced your hard drive, the issue with Windows update indicating services is not started and other errors may be related to the use of Advanced Format drives, especially if the new drive is larger than the one it replaced.

This is a common and known issue I have dealt with over the past several years...see these two topics:
* Windows Search and Indexing crashing
* Windows Update won't run

One way to correct this is to download and install the most current version of Intel Rapid Storage Technology RAID Driver for your system (manufacturer) and reboot several times until they are recognized by Windows. Doing this worked on the Windows 7 HP laptop I had the same issue with last year after replacing and installing a larger hard drive.

Just to add that not all the machines uses the Intel Raid Storage controller before install check on the Windows Device Manager, AFAIK the Intel drivers will not install if the correct hardware isn't present but it's better not to install if not applicable.
