I had a browser hijack problem, and ran Spybot and HijackThis. After cleaning out the suspect files, I am having a problem accessing web pages through IE, even though the homepage loads just fine.
I also have no problem accessing the internet through AOL.
I can however, access all web pages through IE if I enter the full address, ie http://www.yahoo.com, but if I enter just www.yahoo.com, the URL is modified to c:\DocumentsandSettings\Desktop\www.yahoo.com, which of course it cannot find, and generated a "Cannot find server- The Page cannot be displayed" message.
I tried several of the suugestions , including removing the "hosts file", but none of them helped.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Your default prefix has probably been modified by some malware. Do the following:

Create a directory on your hardrive, to save HijackThis.exe, called c:\hijackthis. This is a mandatory step, for the backup and restore functions, of HijackThis, to be able to work.

Download the latest version, from here.
