Please help me... I cannot open up any file up on my laptop. The laptop starts up ... but when I go to click on any desktop icon... or any file within Windows (including the control panel) I get a message saying "Windows Cannot open this file". I cannot access anything in safemode either without receiving the same message. Is this a sign that my hard drive crashed? What can I do? Is the Laptop toast? or can you computer gurus lend a helping hand...

Advice is much appreciated... thanks!

It doesn’t sound to me as if the laptop or hard drive is "toast" since from your description laptop boots up. It sounds more like it may be a file association problem (actually a file extension association problem).

Navigate to a document file (Word, excel, etc.) using Windows Explorer. Right click on that file and select "Open With …" (or "Open"). If you then select the program that normally would open that file, does the proper software launch?

Thank you so much for responding and being willing to help.

Yes, when I select the program that it normally opens with... it opens. However it changes all of the icons to open with that program.

What could be creating this problem? Is there a way to fix it?
