I have a strange issue with my laptop and it seems to have started after a family member used the machine.

First the specs.  Lenove SL500 laptop running Windows 7 Pro x64 with Service Pack 1, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD drive,
T9800 CPU running at 2.93GHz.

My issue.

I have noticed that after a short delay of around a couple of minutes after waking the computer that my CPU usage
goes to 100% and my memory usage goes from its normal 26% up to around 60-65%.  The issue happens after a reboot
as well.

Malwarebytes will start popping up messages about blocked websites such as;
searchnet.blinkxcore.com
66.45.56.109
C:/Windows/SysWOW64/systray.exe
195.2.241.167
C:/Windows/SysWOW64/dllhost.exe
e9967a.com
31.184.192.92
C:/Windows/SysWOW64/dllhost.exe
And I am seeing things like the following in the Task Manager under processes;

msfeedssync.exe *32
systray.exe *32 - multiple copies of this show up at the same time
NAPSTAT.exe *32
wextract.exe *32 - multiple copies of this show up at the same time
Network Access Protection Client UI
Microsoft Connection Manager Monitor
CTF Loader

When I kill my internet connection, the CPU and Memory usage drops down to the normal numbers after a minute or
so.  If I re-establish my internet connection, I run into the problem again after a few minutes.

I have run a full scan with Malwarebytes v2.0.4.1028 with the latest definition files both in normal mode and
safe mode and it finds nothing.

I have also run a full scan with ESET Smart Security v7.0.317.4 with latest defintion file and that also has
found nothing.

As something is clearly not right, any and all help is greatly appreciated.
- Dan

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.
Do NOT use spoilers.
Do NOT edit your reply to post additional logs. Create new reply. I'll not get any email notifications about edits so I won't know you posted something new.

Broni,

I want to thank you for taking the time to help me with my issue.  I am getting started on running the software you have outlined and will post back when I have all the info you have requested.

One question; should I run all these programs with my internet active and the malicious processes running or should I turn off my internet and run the programs.  I assume the software will detect the problem files either way but thought I would ask just in case.

In the mean time, I will start with my internet disabled unless I hear different from you.

- Dan

Thanks,

Dawn

Please go ahead and post the log files that Broni has requested if you've obtained them but I had the same exact problem, same apps running suspiciously in the background, and many websites wouldn't come up unless refreshed, sometimes several times.  I was infected with the Poweliks trojan and had to remove it with a specialized removal tool as the standard malware removal tools didn't find it.  Here is a link to a site here that details the removal process

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-poweliks-trojan

I hope this helps.

If the computer is operable with internet on it's fine to leave it on.

Broni,

Here is what you have requested in order.  I am not sure how to attach a copy of the MBAM file.

Lastly, I ran a tool called ESET Poweliks Cleaner and although I did not let it do anything, it stated I did have this infection.  I would attach the image I have to show you but again I don't know how to attach things.

Thanks.

You ran Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) which is not allowed in this forum instead of Farbar Service Scanner (FSS).

Please post correct log.

How is computer doing?

p22002970.gif Update Firefox to the current 34.0 version.

p22002970.gif Update Adobe Flash Player: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
Make sure you UN-check Yes, install McAfee Security Scan Plus

NOTE 1: Beginning with Adobe Flash Version 11.3, the universal installer includes the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the Flash Player.
NOTE 2: While installing make sure you UN-check any extra garbage which wants to install alongside.

p22002970.gif Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Alternate download: http://www.filehippo.com/search?q=java

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.
Note 2: If you're running 64-bit system make sure you install BOTH, 32-bit and 64-bit Java.
Note 3: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

Updated Firefox.

Updated Adobe Flash Player.

Updated Java to version 8 update 25 and removed version 7 update 71.

I am still seeing flashes of dllhost with the description of COM Surrogate flash and disappear in the Task Manager but I have not seen any messages about blocked websites nor am I seeing extreme CPU or memory usage.

Is there still some remnants of this virus in the system?

Please download Powelikscleaner (by ESET) and save it to your Desktop.

1. Double-click on ESETPoweliksCleaner.exe to start the tool.

2. Read the terms of the End-user license agreement and click Agree.

3. The tool will run automatically. If the cleaner finds a Poweliks infection, press the Y key on your keyboard to remove it.

newtool1_zpsa1caa06e.png

4. If Poweliks was detected "Win32/Poweliks was successfully removed from your system" will be displayed. Press any key to exit the tool and reboot your PC.

The tool will produce a log in the same directory the tool was run from.

Please copy and paste the log in your next reply.

ESETPoweliksCleaner found and successfully removed the virus.

On reboot, I looked at Task Manager and 2 instances of dllhost.exe COM Surrogate appeared and then disappeared.  Still have not seen the blocked website messages or excessive CPU and memory usage.

The log file is about 153 pages (word doc) long.  How should I go about posting it as when I tried to post the whole log file, I received an error that the post was to long.

If I break the file down into smaller chunks, I am not sure how much to include in each post.
