I was having problems with WIndows updates not installing correctly, and I was getting a message that I was not running a genuine copy of Windows, before I got stuck in the current situation. Now I cannot do anything, such as run the DDS tool, because the computer restarts continuously. The restarts occur regardless of whether there is an internet connection, and it also occurs in safe mode. First I get the message:

"Windows based script host has stopped working"
I copied down some things from the details before the pc restarts:

inpagecofire
wbemprox.dll
c000009c
00000003

After that the following message appears:

"Windows must now restart because the [Power service OR Plug and Play service OR DCOM server process] has terminated unexpectedly."

The pc restarts over and over, alternating between these three versions of the message.

Here is some information about my system:

MSI LGA1155/Intel P67 B3/DDR3/SATA3&USB3.0/A&GbE/ATX Motherboard P67A-GD65 (B3)
Intel Core i5-2500K Processor 3.3GHz 6 MB Cache Socket LGA1155
8GB Kit (4GBX2) DDR3 PC3-10600
EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Ti DS 1024 MB

Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB WD1002FAEX

Antec EarthWatts 750 Watt ATX12v v2.3 Power Supply Unit

Also, the pc was at the point that it was not booting at all, and I had to clear the CMOS to get to where I'm at now. I don't know where to go from here. :killcomp:

Update: I never got a reply to this post and the computer has been sitting unused for about two months. Once in a while I turned it on and tried to quickly copy some files to a usb drive before it would restart. Since it restarted after only a minute or so, and it was carrying on other processes to start up, this was time consuming and annoying. I was planning on just getting some more files off of it, and then starting from scratch.

Well today it started up and has not restarted after a few hours. This is the first time it has done this after probably a hundred restarts. Perhaps it is a coincidence, but I used a different monitor with the pc this time. I still got the "Windows based script host has stopped working" message and these are the details:

Problem Signature
Problem Event Name: InPageCoFire
Error Status Code: c000009c
Faulting Media Type: 00000003
Damaged Filename: wbemprox.dll
OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033
Additional Information 1: b688
Additional Information 2: b688e40ddee6555e26a47dbf0ad9b87b
Additional Information 3: ae63
Additional Information 4: ae63fd9c06abfa4442bb1441adaaeca9

Usually I got the restart message shortly after that, but not this time. I ran disk check and got this message:

"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."

It directed me to the CBS log for details, and I have a copy of the log, but I don't know if I should post it here.

Anyway, it still has not restarted and now I have an opportunity to try and do something about this. Even if I do end up having to wipe and start over, I would like to know whether this is virus or whatever. If you can suggest how I might proceed, bear in mind that any diagnostics I run should ideally not involve restarting, because it may very well go back to the endless restarting again.

Maybe somebody can help now? :hello:

Description: The device, \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, has a bad block.

Please run the following hard drive diagnostic: Data Lifeguard Diagnostic For Windows, then let us know whether the result is Pass or Fail.  Run the Extended Test, please.

I ran the test and it said it found bad sectors that might be repairable. I hit "Repair" and it said it was unable to repair. So, a Fail.

That's indicative of a failing hard drive, IMO.

I would backup any desired data files to some safe media...then see about a new/replacement hard drive.

Then, for a second opinion on the drive's status, try the following GSmart Control diagnostic.  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/565216/laptop-running-slow-tried-many-things-and-unreadable-files/?p=3613590 .

I trust two opinions more than one :).

Louis

The second test stopped at 10% Completed with read failure. I take it I need a new drive.

I bought a "System Builder" copy of Windows for this pc, and afterwards I heard that it becomes tied to the exact configuration of the first pc you install it to. If you have to replace the hard drive, the configuration will not be recognized and you just have to buy a whole new copy of Windows. Is this accurate?

I would clone the drive to a new, larger one and run chkdsk and sfc /scannow then defrag the new drive to straighten everything out (if possible).

Hello there,

The second test stopped at 10% Completed with read failure. I take it I need a new drive.

Can you list any pink/red lines in the GSmartControl Attribute tab please?

I would clone the drive to a new, larger one and run chkdsk and sfc /scannow then defrag the new drive to straighten everything out (if possible).

IMO it's not a good idea to clone installations on failing drives, as they tend to be unstable from writing to bad blocks. Just backing up the data and then transfer them to a fresh Windows installation is better.

This was offered as I have actually used this technique several times and seems to work fine on the machines I have cloned.

I had a problem cloning a disk that was too far gone but it was expected.

OP could try it as there is nothing to lose and all to gain (progs and such) if successful.

Just a suggested option.

Edit: A clean install is always better. lol :thumbup2:

I only have System Builder versions of Windows...you have some misinformation that's been presented to you.

A system builder version of Windows is tied to the system configuration (i.e., the motherboard).  If the motherboard changes, that's considered a change of system by Microsoft and you are likely to have problems with any hard drive that may have been used in the system before the change.

Your system builder version will install on any hard drive placed in the system as the Windows drive.  You will have activate Windows again, of course...but, as long as the same motherboard is present, that's a simple exercise taking seconds.

The only time changing hard drives is a pain...is when you change the motherboard.  The motherboard doesn't care if you change from hard drive 1 to hard drive 2, as long as Windows is properly installed and the proper drivers are installed or available for Windows.  Windows doesn't care if the hard drive is changed.

As previously stated...cloning a failing hard drive is likely to be an exercise in futility...but you can try it, if you like.  If you have an install disk for Windows...and have backed up valued data files...there's really no reason to attempt a clone, IMO.

I'm missing something. System Builder is unfamiliar. Of course knowledge/experience of this cannot hurt, eh? I'll kill it in a few days maybe. (note to self....)

We do swap out/repair motherboards and/or HDDs. Cloning is usually carried out via Clonezilla or Acronis.

I just don't get where the re-activation comes in. Maybe one or two out of a hundred that we have done? Nothing a 10 hour ( :lmao:  ) tech-talk with MS can't work out. OMG!

Listen: I have been at this about 5 years. I know I am a puppy and proud of it. I do not shy away from knowledge but I also need to be efficient. Got too bleeping much going on sometimes!

Love you guys always,

1

Thanks everyone,

I have everything I want off of the pc, and I have an installation disc, so I'm going to look at putting an SSD in.
