slow to boot, application freezes

This BYOD laptop takes around 4 minutes to boot.  Applications often freeze - especially when many a few running simultaneously.  In taskmgr, memory and CPU don't appear taxed.

 

Things tried:

 

chkdsk and disk defrag

full Microsoft Security Essentials scan

full MalwareBytes scan

run SpeedFan

ran HijackThis but didn't see anything outstanding

ran Dell System Utilities - all fine

ran iolo System Checkup which seemed to help a bit

Sounds like a bad hard drive, Try to clone your hard drive to a new hard drive and see your results.

If there's no malware (I certainly hope so... it's not my place to give malware advice) and system files are OK, I would suspect a failing hard drive.

Do you have any software that monitors S.M.A.R.T.? (i.e. Acronis Drive Monitor)

Sounds like a bad hard drive, Try to clone your hard drive to a new hard drive and see your results.


If his hard drive really is failing then I wouldn't recommend cloning.

Uninstall the Iolo application mentioned...and any other like it.

If there's no malware (I certainly hope so... it's not my place to give malware advice) and system files are OK, I would suspect a failing hard drive.

Do you have any software that monitors S.M.A.R.T.? (i.e. Acronis Drive Monitor)
 

Sounds like a bad hard drive, Try to clone your hard drive to a new hard drive and see your results.


If his hard drive really is failing then I wouldn't recommend cloning.

 

Ran the extended SMART test in SpeedFan - no errors, full fitness and performance.

System appears to be Dell Studio 14Z/1440.

 

On the surface...there doesn't appear to be anything unusual that you should be concerned with, IMO.

 

Of course...that means nothing.  If all possible problem scenarios were easily detected, it would be a wonderful computing world :).

 

I would run the chkdsk /r command...followed by running the sfc /scannow command...and then see if performance improves.

Two days ago...is two days ago.  I made current suggestions that I would do today/now.

 

Neither the chkdsk /r command nor the sfc /scannow command...can be assumed to be efficiently run only one time...particularly on a system that manifests problems.  On some systems that I have personally looked at on behalf of friends...those commands needed to be run several times before any beneficial effect could be seen.

 

Those of us who have Win 7 can attest that the same is true for Startup Repair...one time doesn't necessarily do the job.

sfc /scannow from the repair CD did not find any integrity violations.

 

Over the coming days, we'll continue to run chkdsk /f and sfc /scannow until we find something or you have another suggestion.

Although these commands will definitely solves the problem but to some extent only. With these commands, to speed up the PC, use cleaner and antivirus also. Try these antivirus utility such as Sophos or Norton 360 or AVG antivirus utility. Secondly, download some good computer cleaning software to clean away all junk. Then uninstall all the unwanted applications.

You did NOT follow the instructions for running chkdsk /r, which is a 5-stage process.  You posted results for the 3-stage automatic process.  Please...do as I suggested.
