I just got a popup screen this morning that says

"warning: your computer may have hardware/spyware virus" And, to call an 877 number. Nope, don't think I will. I will go to Bleeping Computer instead!!! :D

It has "System Performance Checkup" in the title and the url is a org TLD. Gotta love it.

But, this does beg the question, WHAT's UP!?!?

Thank you for being a trusted source to go to.

Paul

I am running Windows 7

and this showed up in Firefox window

You've picked up some adware somewhere or its possible the site you were on is responsible or has been hacked by some malware.

Scan for adware and malware using the programs below to be on the safe side. Eset will take more than hour but is well worth it. The others

less than 10 minutes each.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double-click mbam-setup-2.X.X.XXXX.exe to install the application (X's are the current version number).

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • Once MBAM opens, when it says Your databases are out of date, click the Fix Now button.
  • Click the Settings tab at the top, and then in the left column, select Detections and Protections, and if not already checked place a checkmark in the selection box for Scan for rootkits.
  • Click the Scan tab at the top of the program window, select Threat Scan and click the Scan Now button.
  • If you receive a message that updates are available, click the Update Now button (the update will be downloaded, installed, and the scan will start).
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • If potential threats are detected, ensure that Quarantine is selected as the Action for all the listed items, and click the Apply Actions button.
  • While still on the Scan tab, click the link for View detailed log, and in the window that opens click the Export button, select Text file (*.txt), and save the log to your Desktop.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can also be viewed by clicking the History tab and then selecting Application Logs.

POST THE MBAM LOG FOR REVIEW.

Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window. (Eset can take more than an hour to run so plan accordingly)

  • Click the esetonlinebtn.png button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
  • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the esetsmartinstaller_enu.png icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
  • Scan potentially unwanted applications
  • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
  • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.
  • NOTE:Sometimes if ESET finds no infections it will not create a log.

Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the

Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.

After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.

CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

  • download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
  • After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R0].txt) will open in Notepad for review.
  • After reviewing the log, click on the Clean button.
  • Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts.
  • Press OK again to allow AdwCleaner to restart the computer and complete the removal process.
  • After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[S0].txt) will open automatically.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
  • A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.

Download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

I went through the MBAM and it found 9 problems. I made sure that they were all marked 'Quarantine'. Then clicked the 'Quarantine all ' button. :( Then the program crashed. No text file. Just now running it a second time and so far it's found no problems. Will see if I can find the log that you say is automatically created.

The scan log can be found by opening MBAM and clicking on the history tab. Scan logs are listed by date. So, if you

ran it twice then there should be two logs listed there for yesterday. Just open the first one and copy and paste it.

Hmmm. Finally got it to save a file.  But, mbam now shows no threats. And, keeps crashing after the scan. Going to try uninstalling it and reinstalling. With a fresh restart.

This doesn't include what has already been quarantined from the three scans I did yesterday. :( There just isn't any logs of those.

Were you able to reboot without a problem? Reason I ask is because those items don't show they were quarantined

which sometimes requires a reboot of MBAM.

Please continue with other scans as it appears there is likely more to be found/ removed.

Yea. I rebooted without any problems. The popup scam warning did not show up. So, maybe that was quarantined on the previous scans. :) I have sent a note to malwarebytes to ask about the logging issue and appcrash too.

I am doing the ESET scan now.

Thanks

The eset scan stalled at about 50% on a .iso file. I stopped the scan and got the list. I also deleted that very old iso file.

You need to rerun Eset and make sure you do this in settings: Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"

Have you cleaned up using CCleaner?

What about the scan using Junkware Removal Tool?

You had/ have a ton of adware and at least one Trojan Downloader.

Download Security Check from here or here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

NOTE 1. If one of your security applications (e.g., third-party firewall) requests permission to allow DIG.EXE access the Internet, allow it to do so.
NOTE 2. SecurityCheck may produce some false warning(s), so leave the results reading to me.
NOTE 3. If you receive UNSUPPORTED OPERATING SYSTEM! ABORTED! message restart computer and Security Check should run

Hey, Jack!

It's never toooooo cold to "GO" fly fishin'! Just too much hassle busting up the ice to get the line wet. :D And, if the line gets wet? You have a heck of a time recasting it. ;)

Actually have a river just south of us that is fished all year round. Gotta luv Montanans.

I have restarted that ESET so, it will be a while. I'll redo all the steps after that as well. Going to be a long night.
