Okay, so I have an old laptop that I would use to do basic computing functions such as Office and web surfing. However, it has displayed lots of lag recently. I do not know if it is the result of it being an old computer or if something has a hold on it. It appears as if it is constantly loading something, and it takes longer than it should to open web browsers and other applications. And when it does finally load up the programs, it gets hung up while having the blue ring cursor before it can reestablish its window. Is there a virus, malware, or spyware on it? Last check I did it said nothing malicious was on the system, according to Malwarebytes. So I wonder what it could be. If it is not malware or anything of those sorts, is there a way that my system can become less lagging by tune up or something else. Please let me know. Thank you.

I also did all of the non-malware stuff as well.  It was successful and they did not find any real problems with my computer.  As a note too, when I restarted my system after running Malwarebytes, it did a system update.  That system update was 170 items!  So, that may have been partially the issue.  But I would like to make sure that everything in my system is clean.  So far, so good though.

Slowness, freezing, booting, and performance issues as you describe are not uncommon, especially with older computers. There are various reasons for this besides malware - i.e. disk fragmentation, disk errors, corrupt system files, too many startup programs, unnecessary services running, not enough RAM, dirty hardware components, etc. As you use your system it becomes filled with more files/programs and has a natural tendency to slow down and behave oddly so cleaning and regular maintenance is essential. If you're not finding evidence of malware infection, try some of the suggestions in this guide: Slow Computer/Browser? Check here first; it may not be malware

Hello there,

Please defragment your hard drive - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/improve-performance-defragmenting-hard-disk

:step1: Please uninstall some programs

There's currently some programs on your PC that we need to remove, for the time-being at least. Press the Windows + R key on your keyboard and type in appwiz.cpl and press enter. Navigate to each of the following below one-by-one and click uninstall:

  • Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer
  • Java 7 Update 51
  • Spybot - Search & Destroy

If any programs listed above aren't in Programs and Features, you can just skip them. Please download JavaRa from here and once opened it, select 'remove JRE' (If that's not there, select remove Java Runtime). Make sure you skip the re-install Java option!

:step2: Please download rKill to your desktop

  • Double click it (Win 7, 8 and Vista users, right-click and select run as admin)
  • The tool will run and then a log file should open.
  • Please post the contents of it in your next reply.

Please don't restart your computer before running the next step.

:step3: Please download AdwCleaner to your desktop

  • Double click adwcleaner_x.xxx.exe. (Win 7, 8 and Vista users, right-click and select run as admin)
  • If prompted, click I agree.
  • Click scan. When it's finished, select clean.
  • Allow AdwCleaner to restart your computer.
  • Once your computer's restarted, a log should appear.
  • Please post this in your next reply.

:step4: Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop

  • Double click JRT.exe. (Win 7, 8 and Vista users, right-click and select run as admin)
  • Press any key and the scan will begin.
  • At the end, a log will open. Please post this in your next reply.

:step5: Please visit the ESET Online Scanner webpage
:exclame: Internet Explorer MUST be used for this step.  :exclame:

  • Click the checkbox next to 'Yes, I accept the Terms of Use' and click start.
  • Select the checkboxes which are displayed in the picture below.

jqnp8z.png

  • Press start and the scan will now begin - this scan will take a long time.
  • When the scand finished, select list threats and then export.
  • Choose a name for the log (e.g ESET) and click save (to your desktop)
  • Press the back button and then click finish. Please include the contents of the log in your reply.

I also did the scan for eset; I did not get anything to pick up.  So, I did not get the option of getting a log.

Also, I hope I did the Java Ra correct.  Anyways, all of my steps from the above post are done.  What's next?

We need to get a second opinion on this file: C:\Windows\BR040286.exe

Press the WINKEY + R keys on the keyboard or click the Start Orb > Run... , and in the Open dialog box, type: C:\Windows\
Click OK or press Enter.

Alternatively, click the Start Orb > All Programs > Accessories and open Windows Explorer, then and just navigate to that location.

Scroll through the list of files displayed in that folder and locate: BR040286.exe

If present...go to one of the following online services that analyzes suspicious files:--In the "File to Scan" (Upload or Submit) box, browse to the location of the suspicious file(s) and submit (upload) it for scanning/analysis. If you get a message saying "File has already been analyzed", click Reanalyze or Scan again.

When the scan has finished, post back with the results of the file analysis or copy and paste the URL from your browser address bar directly into your next reply.

Here is the URl address: http://virusscan.jotti.org/en/scanresult/cddf1f6492596acfb74d2443fac76f0b0e8327b0

It didn't find anything.  The only problem was kaspersky's scanner timed out.  I also found a BR040264.exe.  Should i worry about that one too, or disregard it?

Anytime you come across a suspicious file for which you cannot find any information about, a file with a legitimate name but is not located where it is supposed to be or you want a second opinion, you submit it to one of the online services that analyzes suspicious files.

I believe those files are drivers provided by Bison Electronics corp for built-in webcams and USB PC Cameras.

Sweet! Should I uninstall the programs you told me to download earlier with the exception to Malwarebytes?
