I have a new windows 8.1 system.  I have a hard drive from a system that recently died (mother board prob. drive is ok I believe)  I need to get files from the old drive.  It is an SATA drive formatted with a C partition and a D partition.  If I just install the drive to the new system will it recognize it and adjust the drive letters?

I tried using a sabrent USB-DSC8, but the drive would never show up. (only some found hardware beeps from windows, then nothing.)

Thanks

Richard

Hello Richard,

It should work in both situations, maybe you didn't wait enough time for the drives to be detected or you need to open the Disk Manager to assign the Drive letters to the partitions.

Thanks.  I'll install the drive.  I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't try to boot from the old drive. Or if there would be a conflict with it also being labeled a C drive.

If you install the HDD internally you need to enter the BIOS and set the HDD you want to boot from as 1st drive.
