Problem:

I'm trying to figure out why my computer keeps hanging up on me.  I think it's a hardware issue but I haven't been able to pinpoint the problem.  I know for sure it's definitely not malware.  My suspicions include the hard drive, RAM, or the processor, but could be something else.  Any ideas what could cause these hangups?

Symptoms:

  • Chrome: "Waiting for cache" takes a very long time.
  • Windows: When I click on 'Computer', it takes a very long time to bring up my storage devices.
  • When I notice a program hanging, I try to start other programs to see if they're also affected.  As suspected, they all will not respond for a very long time before normal operation is suddenly restored.
  • These symptoms aren't always there.  The PC seems to pick and choose when it wants to operate normally, but the hangups happen quite often when loading web pages or using programs.
  • Was in the middle of playing a game when it froze on me.  Tried to CTRL+ALT+DEL every few seconds.  After a few minutes, I got the "Failure to display security and shut down options" error window.  Then the game crashed to desktop and the PC operated normally.

I'm really leaning toward the problem being the hard drive so immediately I ordered a WD 1TB Blue and made a system image backup on an external drive.  I don't want to risk my data, lol.

Do you notice anything out of the ordinary from the diagnostic reports?

All I see is the obvious...you have DHCP and VSS problems...the install is less than 10 days old.  Nothing unusual reflected in services or RAM usage, IMO.  SMART data indicates no hard drive problem, so I'm curious as to how you can appear to be so definitive that it may be a hardware problem.

My wild guess would be either an illegal install or malware or both...not a hardware situation that yields no visible evidence.  I try to refrain from wildly guessing, since my seer powers are not what they used to be :).  It's easy to believe that problems stem from a hard drive when things go wrong...but I like to verify such by running one or more diagnostics before I panic.

If you want to run a diagnostic on your hard drive...see WD Datalifeguard Diagnostic For Windows , please read instructions before attempting use.

Smart Defrag 3 (HKLM-x32\...\Smart Defrag 3_is1) (Version: 3.3 - IObit)

I have a personal loathing for "developers" like Iolo and IObit...IMO, they take advantage of user ignorance to become computer "witch doctors" capable of casting spells to remove the evil spirits from a computer system...when, in all likelihood their "applications are totally unnecessary and nonbeneficial and may actually be the opposite of "beneficial".  I would uninstall this program were it ever on my system.

Yeah I reformatted after I couldn't figure out a different issue I was having.  Turns out it was a bad graphics driver release so I had to install an older one.

I had the DHCP service turned off because I like to manually assign my network settings but since it was causing issues with other services, I put it back on automatic start.

I don't have any illegal or pirated software running and I'm pretty positive that it isn't malware.  I get most of my apps from CNET or from BC.  I haven't had malicious malware in a decade.  I've been using iObit software for years now and I've never had any issues with them.  In fact, they're some of the best tools I've used.  But since you mentioned it, I'll remove it with Revo and go back to Auslogics Disk Defrag.

The reason I keep thinking it's the hard drive is because it's about 5 years old now and it's been starting to get pretty loud and crackly.  I notice when I hear it crunching, the PC works fine, but when I get hangups and whatnot, I don't hear anything coming from the HD.  Once the PC resumes from the hangup, I immediately start to hear the HD crunching again.

I've run chkdsk and the memory diagnostic (also memtest86+) and they all came up clean the other day.  But I'm not an expert so I can only make guesses based on what I see.  Maybe the disk is fine but the problem is the read/write head?  I'll try running "WD Datalifeguard Diagnostic For Windows"  and see if it finds any errors.

Update:

Ran "WD Datalifeguard Diagnostic For Windows" and it passed the quick and extended tests.  I uninstalled the iObit defragger and replaced it with Auslogics.  I'm gonna give it some time and see if I still have problems with the system.  Will report back in a day or so.

You're wrong about CNET. For the last couple of years, CNET downloads have added PUPs. This is a regular topic of discussion on BC's security forum.

Agree with frankp316 about CNET and various other sites that are popular.

The fact that your system defense mechanisms cannot detect any malware...is no indication of anything other than the fact that they cannot detect anything.  If those defenses were perfect...I doubt that you or anyone else would see the heavy traffic these days regarding systems being infected or having "mystery" downloads onto their systems.

I personally only consider two possibilities of a "safe" download:

    a.  The actual website of program developer.

    b.  BC's download function, which probably links directly to developer website.

I could be wrong but I don't normally fall into the "chicken little" syndrome when it comes to computer safety and the Internet.

You mentioned using Revo to uninstall a program...well, that's typically not necessary if the program can be properly uninstalled via the Windows Add/Remove Program function.

Detailed answers to such...can be easily found, using Google :).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_Host_Configuration_Protocol

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volume_shadow_copy

Generally...DHCP errors may indicate a malware problem...while VSS errors can indicate any number of different issues, including possible malware issues.  If you ever Google either of the errors involving VSS or DHCP...you will see a lot of suspected/possible malware issues.
