Not sure if I should post here or the hardware forum, not really a printer 'issue' as it is a 'connection' issue.

Trying to connect a Brother HL-2280DW printer and I get a dialog box for the User Name & Password.

Is that the user name on the computer?

The user doesn't have a password and I'm not sure what to enter to obtain access to the printer.

Only one user on the computer without a password, I try to enter the name/no password, but that doesn't work.

Options? I must be missing the obvious...

Computer: HP p6610f

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium

RAM: 4 GB

Type: 64-bit

I'm not sure if it's asking for the Brother user name and password but the defaults are:

Username: admin

Password: access

Sorry, didn't work.

Is there a way to reset a username/password on the printer?

I wasn't sure if it wants authentication to the computer or to the printer.

Didn't remember setting anything up on the printer.

Here is a page describing the printer reset.

Here is the Networking Manual for the Printer if you do not have it.

I was able to connect to configure the printer options using:

Username: admin

Password: access

But still not able to connect from my iPhone to the printer.

It still requests a User name & Password to connect to the printer.

It's trying to authenticate to the Windows 7 computer.

There is one user on the system currently, with no password.

I created a new user (with administrator rights) and added a password.

When I attempted to print from the iPhone, I used the new user/password and connection was completed.

Now, I want to remove the new password, but how do I authenticate with a user that has no password?

Getting closer, but doesn't seem to be the complete answer.

Is this the Windows UAC window asking for the password? I don't have a password on a Windows 7 computer and when the UAC dialog appears when I want to install something, I just click Yes and leave the password blank. This is also true when I am on a USER account of the computer. I leave the password blank and click Yes.

If you create a blank password on the admin account and then try to connect to the printer, will it connect by just clicking YES without a password being provided?  I assume you have already tried this though.

It's the authentication on the iPhone to the printer connected to the computer.

I've tried a few of the options.

1. User Name + no password

2. Blank password

3. New password

Nothing seems to work with the original user account.

What am I missing?

I am not sure why this is. Are you using the iphone app?

I'm in Notes app.

Select print option

Select Brother HL-2280DW printer

Then it asks for authentication

It accepts the new user name & password.

BUT NOT the old user name that is not password protected.

(Both have admin rights on the computer)

If I add a password to the old user name, it still does not work.

If you create a new user without password, can you connect to the printer without authentication?

Good idea...

Created a new user account (w/admin rights) without a password.

Attempted to connect, which prompts a user name AND password.

Entered the user name only, fails...

Need to find a solution to that issue.

At this point I would contact Brother Customer Service here. There is the option to live chat, email or phone.

No, it doesn't appear to be a 'printer' issue, but more of a Windows 7 authentication issue.

When I attempt to connect to any other printer option it requires a user name/password.

The only one that works is the one with a password.

I want to be able to delete that account and only use the account without a password.
