I have a computer that I put together maybe a year ago with what I thought were really good components.  It kept rebooting after Kernal Power 41 error.

Today my son wanted to play a game with me so I decided to hook it back up, and got the same results.

It's a shame, because this motherboard and everything attached to it hardly have any hours on it.

Any idea where I would start?

Hi

Follow: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504#method2

Refer to Scenario 3: The system randomly restarts and no Stop error BugcheckCode is listed, or the computer is completely unresponsive (hard hang)

If you can... Press the <F8> key on startup and choose Disable Automatic Restart On System Failure so you can get a better idea of the errors.

If you can get the system to boot into windows, (try Safe Mode with Networking...

Description: A fatal hardware error has occurred.

Error: (12/27/2014 00:47:46 PM) (Source: BugCheck) (User: )
Description: 0x00000124 (0x0000000000000000, 0xfffffa800da878f8, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000)C:\Windows\Minidump\122714-15880-01.dmp122714-15880-01

Seemingly...the above two errors indicate a hardware problem...but I don't see any evidence of a hardware problem, other than such error messages.  FYI, the Kernel Power 41 errors merely indicate that the system had an unexpected/sudden reboot...such does not disclose any idea why the reboot occurred.

Please post the BlueScreenView log suggested earlier.

Is the system being overclocked?

The system is not overclocked.  In the BIOS I have everything set to auto.

I'll post the BlueScreenView log next.

Not sure what to post from BlueScreenView.  Here is a screenshot:

The upper screen contains the BSOD data, the bottom screen is useless for troubleshooting :).

The data reflected isn't very helpful, just generic "I was a witness to the accident" BSODs.

Go to Device Manager...take a look and see if there are any colored markings (red/yellow/black) by any of the hardware categories/items.  typically, there should be none so don't worry about it if it isn't obvious, it's intended to very obvious :).

For 2 of the USB controllers they are yellow:  "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)"

USB controller drivers...should install automatically upon reboot of the system.  The controllers must work properly in order for any USB device to properly configure and function.

Are you saying that no USB devices work on this system?

If not...what USB device is not functioning properly?

The USB devices are working fine.

After about the 4th restart today, after the computer really doing nothing, I'm doing a fresh install of Win7.

Well...before doing a fresh install...it would be wise to run a hard drive diagnostic.

The errors only indicate a "hardware problem"...which is Windowese for "something's wrong but I can't tell what that might be".  Windows considers all drivers to be hardware...that means AV, firewall, recording/playing apllications, and any other device program which has drivers installed as part of the program.  Drivers also include the hardware components on the motherboard...a given function of the board could be a cause of the shutdowns...or the board itself.

http://www.reviversoft.com/blog/2013/09/a-guide-to-the-whea_uncorrectable_error-blue-screen-of-death/

I don't mind buying hardware if I'm convinced that doing so will resolve a problem...but I like to eliminate obvious possibilities before doing so.

There are others here with far more experience/knowledge than myself...I suggest that wait for possible suggestions from those persons...before doing anything.

Louis

WHEA Uncorrectable errors are passed directly from the cpu to the OS, what it is complaining about is a good question, this blue screen is very general and this particular issue is one of the hardest to diagnose without spare parts at the ready. Most of the time it ends up being hardware such as; bad ram, a bad psu, a bad motherboard, or possibly a cpu issue.

Let's run a few diagnostics as Louis suggested, first memtest86+ to test the ram and the cpu at the same time, download and burn memtest86+ to a disc and then boot to that disc, they also have a usb bootable version which you can install to a usb drive and boot to the usb drive (backup data because a format is required) memtest any of the versions below should work:

** Memtest86+ V5.01 (27/09/2013)**

If there are any errors (red lines of code) post those here and also what size ram stick is in each slot specifically. If it is a bad stick, knowing this information will tell me exactly which stick it is. Let memtest run for 3 passes at minimum, if there are no errors at this point lets move on to watching the voltage using HWmonitor, you may need to boot to safe mode to run this if normal mode is crashing:

You can get it here: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Open HWmonitor and let it run, take a screen shot if possible after running for 10-15 minutes or before a crash and post that here. What we will be looking at is the voltages 3.3v, 5v, and 12v, HWmonitor will show the min, avg, and max, if the min or max go above 5% of the specified voltage, there is an issue with either the psu, cpu, or the mainboard voltage regulation, generally trying a different "known" good power supply is the recommended first step. Sometimes HWmonitor is not accurate and it is recommended if there is a voltage that is off, you verify this with a multimeter:

You might also consider booting to linux to see if linux crashes or kernel panics, I generally use mint, you can download and burn that to a disc and boot to the disc: http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php
