I need help. I think my computer has been turned into a bot.

If I boot with no internet connection things are fine, the task manager looks unremarkable, "CPU Usage" is at "0%" and 1.1 amps are being drawn. But if I then connect to the internet and wait, eventually things get crazy: a large number of bogus processes in the task manager using a lot of memory (sometimes in excess of 1,000,000 K), with CPU Usage getting up to 100%, and 2.5 amps being drawn (if the internet is connected when I boot, things start out crazy and stay that way, and accessing any website is next to impossible).

I have screen captures I could upload, if they would be helpful.

AVG detected a number of "IRP Hooks" but couldn't remove them. SuperAntiSpyware, MBAM, MBAR, Avast Antivirus (including the scan on reboot), TDSSKiller, and ESET Online Scan all detected NOTHING.

Oh yes, WHENever I try to download anything, I get a popup saying "Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded" and I have to go and reset Internet Explorer's security settings before I can download it.

This is my system:

Gigabyte-GA-790XTA-UD4
AMD Phenom II X4 965 125W (C3 stepping) 3.4 GHz

Corsair Dominator 4 GB 1600Mhz Dual Channel DDR3 1600 MHz
Sapphire Radeon HD5770 Vapor-X 1 GB DDR5 860 MHz
Creative Labs SB0880 PCI-E SB X-Fi Titanium Sound Card

Razer Lycosa Gaming Keyboard
Razer Deathadder Gaming Mouse

Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit, SP1

The Preparation Guide is extremely old. Should I still download and run DDS? And what should I do about a Windows 7 Firewall?

I ran GMER and pushed the SAVE button and this is what I got:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

step1.gif In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/560436 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

step2.gifIf you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from the following link if you no longer have it available and save it to your destop.

    DDS.com Download Link
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control can be found HERE.

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

I do still need help. The behavior described above continues. If I boot with no internet connection and wait for a bit before plugging it in, everything is fine FOR A WHILE, but eventually it reaches the point where something triggers the spawning of multiple processes which take up hundreds of thousands of k each (or more than a meg), push CPU usage up to 100% (from about zero), and more than double the amount of amperage being drawn by my computer. These processes keep multiplying; if I end a process, or end it's tree, two more appear to take its place. They are bogus processes; for example, one might be named iexplore32.exe. If I end it, the desktop is not visibly affected (and another iexplore32.exe appears to take its place).

If I boot with the computer connected to the internet, this type of haywire behavior begins right away.

I have some Task Manager images I could upload to a suitable site if they would be helpful.

Despite this dramatic behavior, antimalware software seems to be blind. Now I have NOT downloaded Combofix; but I have downloaded and run (in addition to the antimalware software named above) Viprerescue, ADWcleaner, JRT, Sophos Virus Removal Tool, and RKill. A couple of nights ago, in safe mode, I ran MBAR, MBAM, and command line AVG. Then I uninstalled AVG, reinstalled Avast Antispyware, and did the Avast command line scan on reboot. Nothing helps.

I have downloaded Hijackthis and the Security Task Manager, in addition to Autoruns and GMER, but I need help with them.

Whenever I try to download anything, I get a popup saying "Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded" and I have to go and reset Internet Explorer's security settings before I can download it. And, I seem to be unable to set Protected Mode.

I do have my original Windows 7 DVD. Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit, SP1.

This is my system:

Gigabyte-GA-790XTA-UD4
AMD Phenom II X4 965 125W (C3 stepping) 3.4 GHz
Samsung SSD 840 EVO 120GB
WD Caviar Black 1 TB SATA II, 32 MB Cache, 7200 RPM
Samsung DVD-W SATA 22X Lightscribe (OEM)
Corsair Dominator 4 GB 1600Mhz Dual Channel DDR3 1600 MHz
Sapphire Radeon HD5770 Vapor-X 1 GB DDR5 860 MHz
Creative Labs SB0880 PCI-E SB X-Fi Titanium Sound Card

Razer Lycosa Gaming Keyboard
Razer Deathadder Gaming Mouse

Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit, SP1

First, thank you very much for your help.

Second, I couldn't print this but I did open the page on my smartphone. Works just as well.

I have uninstalled MBAM and AdwCleaner. I will try to follow your directions precisely.

MBAM Threat Scan... done. Nothing detected. Log posted below.

Adwcleaner scan... done. Nothing detected. Log posted below.

Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (x64) scan... done. Log posted below.

How is my computer running? At this moment in time, with no internet connection (and with Notepad running), the Task Manager displays 13 processes. Every one of them is 00 under 'CPU'. At the bottom of the Task Manager it says, "Processes: 42, CPU Usage: 0%, Physical Memory: 24%". 1.0 Amps are being drawn. The top five processess are: 1. dllhost.exe 40,616 K; 2. explorer.exe, 39,096 K; 3. taskhost.exe, 7,796 K; 4. avastui.exe *32, 7,660 K; 5. csrss.exe, 7,176 K.

I will now reconnect to the Internet and reboot.

...and... things seem ok... BUT! Right after rebooting, I got about ten messages from Avast saying that malicious websites had been blocked! This is more than AVG ever did... but even after doing some google searches I cannot figure out a way to display the report of what was blocked. :-( I will reboot again and try to get more info...

after rebooting with the internet connected, many more popup alerts which all include info on Domain, IP and Port and all end with:

"Type: Outbound" and "Process: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\dllhost.exe"

So it seems that my computer is still sick but that Avast is providing symptomatic relief (why can't I print a report of what it blocked?)

And if dllhost.exe is infected, why doesn't any software see it???

I think Avast is protecting you.

I need to see the FRST.txt that was created when your ran the Farbar tool.

Eek, I'm sorry. I thought that that was FRST that I was posting. Here it is, up to date and posted (below).

Avast seems to be helping but it is not 100% (what is?) Last night I was listening to a Christmas song on Youtube (I know) and with less than a minute to go the song stopped... I looked at my power strip and noticed that the amperage was spiking. I checked Task Manager and there was a task which was using 206,000 K. I killed it, disconnected from the internet and rebooted. There was a second, similar incident later in the night.

Early this morning there was a popup (might have been Avast or MBAM, not sure) notifying me of a blocked website. I mention it because the Type was Outbound, as before, but the Process was NOT dllhost.exe but... Iexplore.exe (and I am pretty sure that Internet Explorer was NOT running at that moment).

JUST NOW, I turn the computer on with no internet connection and I start getting blocked website popups. What the hey? How can a malicious website be blocked when there is no internet connection? I went to Task Manager right away, and the hijacked, memory hogging process was ... MBAM! First time I've seen that...

I spent a couple of hours observing and taking screen captures last week, on Thursday the 18th. I have twelve screen captures from then. In one of them, I had booted with no internet connection, waited for ten minutes before establishing the internet connection, and then waited... and watched... and waited... until 50 minutes after establishing the internet connection, WHAM! Within seconds, the processes running had gone from 18, to 41. And with CPU usage at 100%, the top eight processes were: 1. rundll32.exe *32  620,088 K;  2. wextract.exe *32  279,396 K;  3. wextract.exe *32  270,288 K;  4. wextract.exe *32  162,564 K;  5. ctfmon.exe *32  140,016 K;  ctfmon.exe *32  135,576 K;  dvdupgrd.exe *32  91,884 K;  dllhst3g.exe *32  63,508 K.

Later that same night I booted with the internet already connected. After only five minutes the top eleven processes were as follows: 1. dllhost.exe *32  1,132,496 K;  2. NAPSTAT.EXE *32  206,384 K;  3. NAPSTAT.EXE *32  158,844 K;  4. dplaysvr.exe *32  88,436 K;  5. systray.exe *32  85,540 K;  6. logagent.exe *32  85,224 K;  7. fixmapi.exe *32  84,176 K;  8. fixmapi.exe *32  71,716 K;  9. shrpubw.exe *32  59,748 K;  10. cmmon32.exe *32  54,636 K;  11. upnpcont.exe *32  48,804 K.

Mind you, AVG was running at all times.

I probably should have mentioned before, sometimes when shutting down I get a Powershell error message - which I never used to.

Normally the Fabar tool will clean it.

Run this tool.

Please download Powelikscleaner (by ESET) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click the 3.png to start the tool.
  • Read the terms of the End-user license agreement and click Agree if you agree to them.
  • The tool will run automatically. If the cleaner finds a Poweliks infection, press the Y key on your keyboard to remove it.
  • If Poweliks was detected "Win32/Poweliks was successfully removed from your system" will be displayed. Press any key to exit the tool and reboot your PC.
  • The tool will produce a log in the same directory the tool was run from.
  • Please copy and paste the log in your next reply.

EDIT: Yesterday I was using my computer conservatively, today I started without the internet - as I usually do lately - then connected - and left it connected. Reading articles from NY Times, NPR and nma-fallout.com. I also used Youtube to listen to some music. rundll.exe is not visible in the Task Manager; iexplore.exe  uses more than 200,000 K, which seems like a lot, and for every tab I open there is an additional process that uses about 100,000 K. But when I close Internet Explorer, they soon disappear and everything seems calm. I've been running like this for close to two hours now and so far, so good! (below is the frst.txt which I posted earlier. end of edit)
