I am trying to clean my girlfriends computer which cannot connect to any wireless router.  I have gone through the normal malware and security cleanses (Malware bytes, JRT, AVG) and got to the point that they come up clean when rerun (but had a host of issues prior).  Two issues are still present - I randomly still get chkdsk errors, but cannot fix them in the command box, as it tells me it is being used by something else so I have to schedule it for next reboot.  The second an main issue is that I cannot connect to wireless.  Initially the adapter would not even show any wireless routers.  After deleting/recreating the adapter and other tricks I have found it starting showing all the routers in my building but if I tried to connect to them it would not give me a prompt for a password (the icon also did no indicate that it was secure network).  I ran SFC /Scannow once and the logfile shows tons of files that it could not repair.  After all that, my adapter is no longer showing any wireless routers anymore.  I believe I still have some viruses (or reminiscent thereof) but I think I have many corrupted files.  Also - no Windows recovery disk and the only option this MSI laptop has is a full blown recovery that wipes the disk which is my last resort.

Thanks

Jack

Have you tried those steps from Safe Mode with Networking

Can you run this if needed copy to a flash drive and run from there.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
[list]
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.
Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

How do I get help? Who is helping me?For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear....Become a BleepingComputer fan: Facebook

Can you also run these .. Use flash again if needed.

.
ADW Cleaner

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
  • After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R0].txt) will open in Notepad for review.
  • After reviewing the log, click on the Clean button.
  • Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts.
  • Press OK again to allow AdwCleaner to restart the computer and complete the removal process.
  • After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[S0].txt) will open automatically.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
  • A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.
  • -- Note: The contents of the AdwCleaner log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you recognize and know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, return to AdwCleaner before cleaning...all detected items will be listed (and checked) in each tab. Click on each one and uncheck any items you want to keep (except you cannot uncheck Chrome and Firefox preferences lines).

    .

Thanks for your help so far...

I initially ran the AdwCleaner and JRT in Safe mode.  I then went old school and connected the computer to my router via LAN cable and was able to connect to the internet.  Once this happened, the computer slowed down quite a bit and even locked up on one occasion.  I found one file, MGSysCtrl.exe, using 50% of my CPU so I had to end the process to get anything to work, and even then my HD LED indicated that it was constantly working (and saw this on my Resource Utilization file as well).  I was able to load ESET via the LAN and get it running, but it would crash the computer (BSOD) about 1 hour into the scan, which was just under 50% complete.  After 3 tries I ran ESET in Safe mode and it completed.

I looked up the MGSysCtrl.exe file and see that is a not a virus but can task your CPU.   I normally would just uninstall it but the file is created by MSI, which is the maker of this laptop.  Earlier I tried to download some drivers and found that the laptop is discontinued and they no longer had a driver suite for it, so I am hesitant to get rid of it.  Not that I won't, I just don't want to lose my function keys.

Below is the output files:

How is it now?

The file MGSysCtrl.exe ... if located here is NOT malware.... C:\Program Files\LG Software\System Control Manager\MGSysCtrl.exe

I still cannot connect to the internet via the wireless adapter.  It still shows all the routers but when I hit 'connect' it never prompts for the password.  Also, now that I connected to the internet via LAN cable, the HD seems to be over-tasked and constantly moving.  I believe that i am having a HD issue on top of everything else because my Chkdsk app pops up most times that the computer crashes.  Any thoughts on how to clean the hard drive?  It is also possible that I lost some files which is why my adapter won't connect.  I have run SFC /scannow and get a huge list of missing files.

Any thoughts?   Thanks for all your time and patience!

We can try this to see about the files.

Download Windows Repair (All in One) from this site

Install the program then run it.

NOTE 1. In Windows Vista, 7 and 8 right click on the program, click "Run As Administrator".
NOTE 2. Disable your antivirus program before running Windows Repair.

Go to Step 3 and click on Check button next to 1. See If Check Disk Is Needed.
If the tool indicates that the Check Disk is needed click on Do It button next to 2. Check Disk, then restart your computer.

Once the above is done, go to Step 4 and allow it to run System File Check by clicking on the Do It button.

1406373250-4-o.png

Go to Step 5 and under"System Restore" click on Create button.

1406373259-5-o.png

Go to Start Repairs tab and click the Start button.

Leave the check marks as they are.
NOTE for Windows 8 users. Reset Registry Permissions is NOT checked by design.

Click on Start Repairs button.

After the repair finished, you may be prompted to restart the computer. Please allow it to do so.

Please post the Windows Repair log which is located in the following folder:
64-bit systems - C:\Program Files (x86)\Tweaking.com\Windows Repair (All in One)\Logs
32-bit systems - C:\Program Files\Tweaking.com\Windows Repair (All in One)\Logs

Still cannot connect via wireless.    This is the second run of Windows Repair.  The first run hung up when searching for MOF files under WMI repair... which is an issue anyway because I cannot perform a search.  Even under the 'Start button' and entry into the search bar just comes up blank.
