Legitimate sites first.

Commercial sites obviously gain by marketing their goods and services or by taking a commission - think Amazon, E-bay, Newegg. Private sites such as blogs and so on in part get material reward by carrying advertising and partly non-material rewards such as personal satisfaction. Then you have sites run primarily for the benefit of members of a Club - news, competition results and so on.

Non-legitimate sites.

Normally get their rewards either by scamming you out of money directly, infecting computers with malware which leads to loss of valuable data - think Sony - or leads to costs through such things as ransomware.
