I am using the Internal Hard Drive from my Old PC, as an External Hard Drive on my New PC.

I can see all the files, and documents stored on the Old Hard Drive, but I can't access them.

Pop Up Message about Security and Admin Access only.

I have done this before, with other PC. That is, I have used the Old Internal HD as External HD, and never had a problem accessing the files and documents.

On previous HD and this HD, I deleted the Windows OS, to free up space.

Any suggestion to resolve this problem would be welcome.

Thank You,

MM

You need to take ownership of the drive.

Thank you very much.

I knew that a member of BleepingPC would know the answer.

I will give it a try.

My Results;

I was able to assume ownership, but in the exact way you instructed.

I was not able to change the ownership, but was able to change and edit permissions.

This allowed me to delete certain files, I was not able to delete before.

However,

I was not able to open/view any of the documents, specifically the word doc.

Not sure Why,

Here are my thoughts......

1. The Youtube Video you showed me, You were unlocking a VISTA HD  I am trying to unlock an XP HD.

I have no idea if that made a difference???? I did not see the tabs about Changing OWNERSHIP, but I did see the PERMISSION, ie USERS, and SYSTEM, or the Identity of the PC I am using to try and unlock the HD.

What you showed me, would take less then 5 min...

After about an hour, I gave up.

Any other suggestions?

Thank you.

Sorry, I should have asked what OS you were using. If you have XP home then boot to safe mode and log into the Administrators account that shows up only in safe mode or any account with admin rights. You should have access to the Security tab where you can take ownership. Are you just trying to access one file?

Here is a guide instead of the video. Also this which may give a better explanation.

Thank for taking the time to explain.

Unfortunately, I no longer have access to any XP PC.   W7 and W8.

I will keep this forum post up a littler longer, then I will have physically destroy the XP HD, for privacy sake.

TY
