Hello, I have a Compaq computer system that I did a drive clone to another Hard drive.  What I would like to do is take the Compaq clone drive and install it in the HP computer.  As expected, Windows 7 just cycles during boot.

I recall with XP that you can put the XP Install CD and boot to it and do the " R " for repair.  It would go through and reconfigure Win Operating system to work with other computer with out loosing and programs, setup, data, etc...

Can this same scenario be done with Windows 7...

Thank You for your time,

kewltec...

Unless the WIndows 7 on the Compaq is a retail version and not an OEM version that was installed when purchased, you cannot transfer it. An OEM version of Windows has to stay with the machine. The OEM version would also have a SLP key for the SLIC BIOS which does a pre-activation of Windows 7 on OEM computers and would not be compatible with the HP.  At the very least you would need to do a phone activation, telling Microsoft you moved Windows 7 from the Compaq to the HP.

There are programs that will let you do a bare metal transfer of the OS and let you install drivers during the transfer but if the Compaq has an OEM license of Windows 7 you will never be able to activate it on the HP computer.

And if Windows 7 was retail with a key you purchased, you would be better off doing a clean install on the HP.
