I posted this in the Security Forum and the BC advisor says I have no infection and should re-post here.

My daughter lives in an apartment where she shares the web connection of the business downstairs. The router password is simply the business name. Her browsing became extremely slow when she moved there.

My computer was running fine . One day I got on the web at her apartment. . All was fine as I was on the web at that location. After I returned home that day and restarted my computer, all operations are 5-10 times slower. After a restart, it takes 4 minutes for my home page to come up. Firefox is my default browser. Getting to a site's  home page takes several tries and takes much longer, then navigating within the site takes much longer or fails entirely. For example , I can get to my email home page and after 1-3 tries over 5 minutes I can view an email. I can get to Netflix home page but cannot connect to watch a movie, regardless of how many times I try, I just get the "something's wrong" message. IE works better (I can connect to a Netflix streaming movie) but is still slow.

It seems to me I picked up something from a possibly hacked web connection.

My system is a Toshiba Satelite C655D, 4 GB Ram, 64 bit, with Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1.

Louis:

Thank you for responding.

The affected computer is a laptop. It is usually connected wirelessly on my home network, but it has the same issues if connected by ethernet cable on my home network, and when to connected to networks other than at my home. My other home computer is a desktop connected by ethernet cable, and it browses with instant response to any clik. My family has 3  other laptops which are similarly slow, but not as slow as my laptop, whether connected to home or other networks.

I followed all the instructions in your post and have attached results below.

I don't really see anything.

But I would uninstall ALL McAfee software, then use Microsoft Security Essentials and the Windows Firewall for a day or two.

Let us know if the slowness continues.

Would doing an IP reset help here? The other thing that came to mind is do you know you are connected to your home network and not mistakenly  connected to an unsecured network?

johnaubrey,

I just noticed that the Speccy report is showing the S.M.A.R.T. status of your hard drive as "Warning".  This is an indication of a potentially failing hard drive.

Therefore, I would recommend immediately backing up any important data files you don't want to risk losing.

Torvald is right, I don't know how I missed that.

After backing up valued files, I would run the following SeaTools for DOS diagnostic (long test).

Guide, SeaTools For DOS - http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/SeaToolsDOSguide.pdf

SeaTools for DOS Download - http://www.seagate.com/support/internal-hard-drives/consumer-electronics/ld25-series/seatools-dos-master/

Kingdom Seeker:

I am sure I am connected to my home wireless network, which is well secured. I have the same slow browsing on the 2 other secured networks I have used at friends homes.

To All:

My family uses 3 other computers on my network and all have similar problems with slow browsing. On all 4 computers,

in addition to McAfee, I also use several other security programs, which, if I understood correctly, previous BC moderators have said are compatible with Mcafee: MalwareBytes, SpywareBlaster, Spybot, and SuperAntiSpyware. Did I misunderstand, could these be causing the problem?

Well...let's try NOT to degenerate to random guessing without any evidence :).  To go over all the "coulds" of computing problems...that would take a considerable amount of time and probably not be fruitful in terms of a solution (unless one believes random guessing is better than trying to solve it logically).

The fact that all computers on the network...suffer from the same symptoms...would seemingly indicate malware, IMO.  That would be my start point, eliminating or confirming the presence of malware on this network.

None of the tools I asked you to use are designed to reveal anything about malware...that's done in the Am I Infected forum.  I can move this topic there, if you like.

Good point about random guessing. I'll just follow your advice.

I first posted this in Malware, and the BC moderator Broni tried everything he could think of and found no malware. He suggested I re-post in Windows.

I have backed up my files as you suggested in your 12/19 post, and will now run the Sea Tools.

My apologies...you stated that in your initial post and I guess I forgot what was in that post.  Broni certainly is more knowledgeable (about everything) than I am and we will now dispense with the "possible malware theory of computer confusion :).

I wish that I had something brilliant to offer but I do not.  I am nonplussed by the fact that 4 out of 5 different computers on the same home network have similar/same issues...yet one desktop does not wxhibit issues via ethernet while yours does.

I don't know if it it useful, but the desktop which browses fast is protected by AVG Free, and all the laptops are protected by McAfee.

Hamluis:

I have been unable to run SeaTools. I downloaded it to my desktop successfully. I copied it 2 new unused CDs, On one CD I chose the format option for "use as a flash drive" and on the other I chose to use as "a CD or DVD". I placed each of these in the computer's CD drive and restarted; neither booted into SeaTools. I then changed the boot order as described in the SeaTools instructions. Original first boot position was "HDD/SDD". I tried "FDD" (floppy disc drive?) and "CD/DVD"; neither booted into SeaTools with either of the CDs I prepared.

Any suggestions?

I cannot improve on the Seagate instructions...they are very definitive, IMO.
