I am running Win7 Pro 64bit (My Grandson's PC). The problem is that when he opens Chrome he can get Google & Gmail but gets an error when he tries to go anywhere else. The error tells me that I can't connect to the proxy server. I have tried changing the LAN settings but that doesn't work. It was suggested I check Windows Defender & Windows Firewall. Defender is out of date & will not turn on. Firewall says connected to Public but Home Network is not connected. I can't seem to find a way to connect it. He uses Windows security Essentials.

I hope someone can help me with this. He is 14 & is very discouraged & impatient because I can usually fix his problems but I am lost on this.

Many Thanks,
MamaWolf

Choosing a network location

Google Chrome LAN settings thread

Try a different browser and see if the problem is isolated to Chrome only and by the way, :welcome: to Bleeping Computer.

Check Chrome settings to see if a proxy server has been set up. Click the 3 stacked lines in the upper right corner. click Settings, scroll down and click She advanced settings, scroll to the Networking section, and click the Change proxy settings button. If there is anything in the box click on it and click remove. then click on the LAN settings button and uncheck anything in there. click OK x 2 and close and reopen the browser to see.

If there was anything in the proxy settings and there shouldn't have been(ie someone didn't set it up), that might be a malware issue. If you uncheck/remove the things and they come back it's definitely a malware issue.

We have tried everything both of you suggested. First, IE does the same thing as Chrome so it isn't a browser issue. Nothing else worked. still the same problem. I am at the point that I am ready to use his repair disc & I really hate doing that.I have him copying things he doesn't want to lose to my external. Unfortunately he will have to re-install his games & will lose what he has done in them so far. He said Minecraft will be okay.

Yes, we have scanned with SuperAntiSpyware & with MalwareBytes no less than 20+ times in the past week.

Download MiniToolBox and open/run the program.
When open, checkmark or select all options then click Go.
A notepad will open then copy-paste the report on your next reply.

Download then run Farbar Service Scanner and checkmark all boxes.
Click Scan and then a Notepad text will open. Copy-Paste the report on your next reply.

Ok so you tried to change the LAN settings but it didn't work, what does that mean? is it set to a proxy, you clear it, and it goes back? it's not set to a proxy? What happens in safe mode?

I haven't tried it in safe mode. When he gets home from school I will. As for the LAN settings, we cleared it & it goes back. I am going to download the 2 programs suggested by jhayz on my PC & put them on my external so he can run them. I will post the reports then.

If you clear the proxy settings and they go back automatically, that is malware. And will need to be cleaned.

If you can get an updated Malwarebytes on his system, run it in safe mode and then see if you can undo the proxy. If you have done that and you still can't get the proxy to turn off, it's time to get into the registry.

Boot into Safe mode., in the search box type 'regedit' and you'll need to Run as Admin. then click the little arrow beside 'HKEY_Current_User' -> 'Software' -> 'Microsoft' -> 'Windows' -> 'CurrentVersion' click on 'Internet Settings'. In the list look 'Proxy Enable' and 'Proxy Server' right click on each and Delete. A warning will pop up about deleting it, click Yes or OK . Then in the list under 'CurrentVersion' click on Run. if there is a weird setting there delete it. There may or may not be. Reboot back into normal windows and check if you get the same error.

Attention: jhayz & CaveDweller2

1. Below are the logs from MiniToolBox & Farbar Service Scanner.

2. I went into safe mode & turned Windows Defender on & scanned & then opened Chrome & unchecked the proxy serer & checked automatically detect & restarted the PC---Problem Solved. Now what I want to know yet is whether this is likely to revert back since we found no malware to remove.

I can't begin to tell you guys how helpful you have been.

May you both have a blessed Christmas.

Interesting. Did you run those programs after the safe mode?

weird. I'm glad it's fixed. I'm not sure what caused it so no idea if it will come back. If it does and safe mode doesn't work....try the registry thing. =)

I too am glad that you have it fixed, and it will stop your Grandson nagging you !

Both Cavedweller and I were concerned that there might be something more serious behind this problem. Now you need to make sure that your Win Defender (and any other security products you use) is turned on and up to date, and check that you are getting Windows updates.

If you have any more problems, or if this comes back to haunt us all, feel free to start a new topic at any time, and you can always include a reference to this one if you wish. The reference is the URL at the top of your topic page, here it is for convenience :
