Reason number 1: if it comes from file-downloads.net, it does not approve since history shows that site has downloaded viruses I guess.

a) observed when attempting to download shortcut cleaner

Reason number 2: when analyzing combofix.exe, Norton reports the threat Suspicious.Cloud.7.EP, so the file was removed

a) observed when attempting to download combofix.exe

Should I disable Norton, then download combofix.exe?

Note I am attempting to solve some link redirection to random web page symptom.

Thanks.

I already purchased Malwarebytes premium, so no need to download.

The Malwarebytes scan, with rootkit enabled, produced 0 problems, see attached log.

The AdwCleaner scan found a few directories to remove, and some registry items to remove, see attached log.

Note am still reluctant to download farbar, since Norton still complains.

One other note, I scanned using Malwarebytes anti rootkit Beta on Dec 13 and the lone entry it deleted was this item:

Infected: HKU\S-1-5-21-350934956-3687080272-4012066645-1000_Classes\CLSID\{AB8902B4-09CA-4bb6-B78D-A8F59079A8D5} --> [Trojan.Poweliks.B]

Attached File  MalwareBytesLog.txt   1.04KB   0 downloads

Attached File  AdwCleanerS3.txt   2.66KB   2 downloads

One other note, I tried to download Combofix again, and this time it worked, Norton did not complain.

However, Norton complains about farbar. saying frst64.exe fails for WS.Reputation.1.

I have submitted a false positive report to Symantec about farbar recovery scan.

Do no wait for their answer. It's fine dequarantine the downloaded file and run it.

Hi Nasdaq,

Symantec appears to agree with me that Norton rejection of farbar is a false positive and will remove it from their detection algorithm within 24 hours.

I prefer to wait for their update, posted yesterday, before allowing farbar to load.

Cut and Pasted from their replies:

In relation to submission [3691749].

Upon further analysis and investigation we have verified your submission and as such this detection will be removed from our products.

In relation to submission [3691749].

Detection will be removed within 24 hrs. The updated detection will be distributed in the next set of virus definitions, available via LiveUpdate

Hi Nasdaq,

One more question.  I ran AdwCleaner again, and it found one registry item to delete:

HKLM64\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{D1A4762A-11DF-4E7D-ADE7-C6D149BD8B37}

Delete it?

Thanks.

HKLM64\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{D1A4762A-11DF-4E7D-ADE7-C6D149BD8B37}

Left over from installshield nothing to worry about.

You can remove it.

Restrictions set by the malware.
Empty registry keys removed.
The others are just PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) installed without your consent. The usually come from free programs that are installed.

Hi Nasdaq,

Interestingly, my Adobe Flash Player is already the latest version of 16.0.0.235, despite Security Check reporting  it to be 15.0.0.152.

I verified this using the Find version link, and running Security Check again.

How can Security Check be wrong on this count?

The tool must be revised when new versions or Flash are issued.

It will be corrected with the next release.

p.s.
Make sure you check with Chrome and Internet Explorer.
Both must be installed.
