I heard from a friend that this was the place to go when I couldn't seem to find good advice, I appreciate you taking time out of your day to read this and any help is appreciated. When I turn on my laptop it shows a white box that says "Your computer has been locked for security reasons (0x1801): This computer has been infected by a virus. To protect the hardware and the data on this computer. It has been shutdown." Behind the box is a red background with some black and yellow text and somewhere to enter a password, doesn't specify which password, tried all I use, none work. The bottom right says Trilock Plus. I've downloaded nothing fishy lately, it randomly rebooted mid youtube video then wouldn't let me get to the desktop.

G'day Browned, and Welcome to BC.

Are you able to access Safe Mode ?

HERE'S HOW

Have you owned this laptop for very long....did you purchase it new....was it a rental at any time in its history ?

What OS are you using...win 7 ...?

Do you have access to another pc ?

It's about a year old now, was bought new, windows 8
I could likely in a pinch borrow someone's laptop

The response on the screen reeks of Ransomeware....It would be really helpful if we knew which one !!

Can you read any of the background text ?

Haha, ransomware doesn't sound good. I can read it all, sorry I didn't type it before on an iPhone 3, the yellow text says "The hardware on this computer has been deactivated. Warning: Attempting to bypass or reactivate this device without the proper password may result in damage to this system and loss of data. Please call your provider for activation information." I didn't call the provider thinking there's no way they had something to do with this. The black text says " Information: Device Machine [LOCKED ] Device Key [246E929190C15] {E4-5EA2A1-80D16} Version 6.2.3 (Build1441a)"

Hello -

Is this, or was this ever a Rental or Hire Purchase type of computer ??

Just been researching the info you gave, TriLock Plus is an "installed security application" known to be used by rental and similar companies.

Also Pawn shops and other places where you may purchase on a "Time-Payment" plan

Maybe the first step is to check with PC Sales (or rental) shop and ask if this lockout is possibly down to their installed software?

Thank You -

It would appear your grandmother purchased it from somewhere that has failed to inform her that it has anti theft/anti loss programming enabled on it.

You will need to speak to grandma and get the necessary information.

If we can help in any way, please post back here.

I had this same thing happen to me. I bought a computer from someone who bought one off ebay and it turned out to be locked with the red screen. Iy gets embedded on your hard drive and all that you need to do is replace your hard drive and re-image your laptop.
