Recently installed Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit BETA program as I suspect there may be some malware on my system (because very slow loading several forum pages; difficulty in creating and replying to posts).

Basically the program will not scan. Get error messages "Initializing database failed" (or similar text) or "Could not initialize database"!?

After installation, downloaded the latest database before trying to scan. Didn't seem to be any issues with the download.

Using Windows 7 x64 SP1 and running MBAR as 'Run as administrator'.

Why is this program not working properly? Why the errors?

:welcome: to Bleeping Computer.

If you're having issues or specific error messages while using Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit (MBAR), please report them at the Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit BETA Help forum so they can investigate and correct the problem.

It appears you have already started a topic and asked here.

The Tech Support & Help Forum team know the inner workings of the program and have direct access to the developer and research engineers. Your best option is ask and wait for them to figure out what is going on.
