I have an HP Pavilion dv9000 laptop running Vista Service Pack 1 with a sound card issue. The system was having some malware issues form another user so I did a destructive restore using the factory partition. Everything looks great but I have no sound. When I mouse over the speaker icon in the system tray it says No audio output device is installed. I looked in Device Manager and the "Sound, video and game controllers" section is not listed so I could not try to reinstall the driver as suggested on other forums. There are no unknown items and everything appears to be installed correctly. I did a second destructive restore out of frustration and had the same results. I have done all of the available Windows Updates. I have made sure that the Windows Audio service is running, as was suggested on an HP Support page.

Seems windows is not seeing that you even have a sound device.

I would try booting to a Mint linux live cd and see if sound works on there. If not, that isn't exactly conclusive, but I would guess that the sound card physically doesn't work anymore for some crazy reason. And then your only recourse would be to get a usb sound adapter.

Your reasoning is off :).

There is no area for Sound, etc in Device Manager...when there are no audio drivers installed.  Try installing the proper drivers.  Download the file, double-click on it and it should all happen.

My reasoning is based on my understanding that if there were audio devices that windows could see, then they would either be listed under the Sound section (which we know they aren't), or listed under unknown devices. But he says there are no unknown devices listed. If windows doesn't show them in either place, yet they can still be given proper drivers, that's news to me.

Also I have never seen an HP/Dell/Toshiba factory restore that doesn't install the drivers (along with the branded bloatware etc), so that suggests to me that the HP/Windows install didn't see the sound card either. If I'm wrong on both counts then I'll have learned 2 new unexpected things :)

I tried to use the live CD but my CD drive is not showing up. I tried to install the audio drivers but got an error that the media device was not found.

You could boot to a linux usb stick then (sorry I don't have the instructions for that, it's around somewhere), and then see if the sound or cdrom work in linux. That will pretty much confirm if it's a hardware issue or a windows issue. I could be wrong, but as it stands right now I think there should be no way it's a windows issue considering you factory restored. And also almost no way it's a hardware issue since it was just working fine before you did the factory reset. Which just leaves you scratching your head.

I booted into Mint on a USB stick. The audio applet installed and shows 100% volume but I still don't have sound. I am starting to believe that this is a hardware issue. I have read that several models of the DV series have had joint solder issues with the optical drive and sound card connection.

I noticed several errors caused by HPKBDAPP.exe. The description says it involves sounds and volume control.

HPKBDAPP.exeRelated to HP_QuickTouch This software provides on-screen visuals and associated sounds that are displayed and heard when adjusting the notebook volume. The info at this link may help. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericSoftwareDownloadIndex?cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&softwareitem=ob-56178-1&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN,

No audio device is reflected/detected for Speccy system hardware.  If one was detected but merely missing a driver, it would be reflected as detected on the hardware configuration data by Speccy.  I note that Speccy data also indicates no optical drive.  If those devices exist but are not being detected...I think I'd be looking at a motherboard problem.

The HP QuickTouch software is installed and generates an error after Windows starts because the audio device can not be found. The optical drive has a light on it and spins up when a disk is inserted but is not recognized in Windows or on boot. I have to agree with Louis that it is unfortunately a motherboard problem. This laptop is about 8 years old and might have outlived it usefulness.

Glad to see my reasoning is intact    <3  (could not help myself from saying that)

Too bad about the laptop though :|   You can still use a usb sound adapter and speakers (or just a usb speaker bar), and an external optical drive, but, yeah, that kind of sucks, but it is an option.
