I have a laptop that has a faint light, maybe the back-light, on the display. No image is shown. I attached an external monitor and it shows nothing. I can hear the laptop boot. I unplugged the cmos battery and pressed the power button several times with the laptop battery out. I'm thinking the mobo is bad but wanted to get opinions on this.

If you have no video output to the external monitor then it is the MB. Some lappys (usually hi-end models) may have discrete vid-cards, but it is rare.
