I know the information for the start menu is still there. I know this because a program called Sandboxie lets me open a sandboxed start menu, that looks similar to classical start menus with programs i would expect to find in a traditional start menu.

I expect there is a folder hiding somewhere in my hard drive with shortcuts to all of what would normally be on the traditional start menu.. I've been looking but I can't find it.

Anybody know?

Please

Has been changed in windows 8.1 to reflect a "Start Menu". You can always download a program called ClassicShell and it gives you a normal start menu again.

I installed Classic Shell on my 8.1 and generally it operates like a Windows 7 with plenty of extras.

It takes a bit to fully get around how easy this can be. Try it and you can always remove it if it is not exactly what you want.

Thank You

The start menu is located here:

%UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\ <- User start menu
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\ <- Common start menu
Icons pinned to the taskbar are found in this location:

%UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\
Icons pinned to the Windows 8 Start Screen are found here:

%UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\
Though a shortcut may appear in the above location it wont display on the start screen unless information about this shortcut is also added to this file:

%UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\appsFolder.itemdata-ms
Windows 8 MS app tiles are here, though I wouldn't mess with them.

%UserProfile%\appdata\local\microsoft\windows\application shortcuts\
Hope this helps.
