Hello,

I am trying to collect the data to post for a virus issue I am having. I downloaded the DDS application, based on the instructions to post my issue, but when I launch the DDS application I get the following message:

DDS is not meant to run in 'Compatibility Mode'.

This program shall exit now.

I am not sure how to turn off Compatibility Mode. I am trying to run the DDS application from the Desktop in Windows 8 by going into file manager and double clicking the DDS.exe file from my Downloads directory.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I am a new user to the site so if I missed anything to provide, please let me know!

Hi laprea,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer!  :welcome:

At the time of writing this DDS is simply not compatible with Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, you are doing nothing wrong.

You say you are preparing the logs to request help dealing with malware. Are you following the guide located here?

Once finished with that preparatory guide you will need to start a thread here in order for someone to assist you with malware removal.

Let me know if you have any questions. :)

DDS does not work on Windows 8 ..... Start a new topic in http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/22/virus-trojan-spyware-and-malware-removal-logs/ and describe your problem, so you can get the correct tools for help.

Thank you Cody and Jacee for the quick response. Much appreciated....

Hi Cody,

I am following the Guide - which in Step 6 asks for the DDS log/information when posting for help - Can I suggest a note in the Guide for new users like myself that this is not for Windows 8 users?

Hi Jacee,

I will post accordingly. Thanks!

Working on contacting the appropriate staff to make that edit.

The only reason I can think of as to why it hasn't already been done is that DDS is being worked on to be made compatible with Windows 8/8.1.

Those following the Prep Guide and clicking on the link to download DDS will be directed to the authorized download page which provides the system requirements for DDS.

Operating System:
Windows XP/Vista/7
32-bit program. Can run on both a 32-bit and 64-bit OS

The Preparation Guide also states...

If you have any problems running DDS or generating a log, then please proceed to the next step and state what problems you had with DDS when creating your malware help topic.

In your case, just say you are using Windows 8.1 and DDS is not compatible with that OS.

As Jacee, indicated there are other tools you will be ask to run once an MRT Helper replies to your topic.

Now that your new topic is posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a Malware Response Team member...nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the information or any log(s) you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the member assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process or make things worst which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

From this point on the Malware Response Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.

Please be patient. It may take several days to get a response because the Malware Response Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your post or make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the Malware Response Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another Malware Response Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, please follow Step One and CLICK the link so it will report your topic to the team members.

To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic.

Good luck.
