Good afternoon,

Overview: for the last 3  weeks, 1 of my processor's (Intel Core 2 6320) 2 cores has randomly been spinning up to 100% utilization, resulting in overall sluggishness as the machine then struggles to chug along on the remaining core.

Background & What-I've-Done-So-Far:

3 weeks ago I changed my videocard (went from nVidia 8300 GS to 8400 GS) and updated my Intel 330 SSD's Toolbox software from version 3.2.1 to 3.2.3. Since that time, the 0 core has randomly been spiking up to 100% utilization and staying there for a bit. I've reverted to the previous GPU and did clean uninstalls & reinstalls of the GPU drivers, to no avail. I've contacted Intel and they provided me with the previous (3.2.1) version of their SSD Toolbox software, but that didn't help either. I've tried to do System Restores from Normal Mode and from Safe Mode to various points preceding the GPU swap and software update, and all of those failed (system restore cannot restore system). Lastly I've run Spybot S&D, MBAM and Norton Security Suite's scanners, and all of them have come up empty as far as viruses/malware are concerned.

Edit: Forgot to mention that I've closely monitored Task Manager & Process Explorer, and neither of them have shown any executables or processes running while the 0 core is chugging along at full steam.

Suggestions on where to go from here testing/scanning/etc-wise would be greatly appreciated!

PS: sub'd to this thread for replies, thanks!

In task manager run Resource monitor, then try to figure which process is holding up the CPU. Send screenshots.

True, I forgot that detail, long time no see Home edition in use.

Try with this:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

Also sorting CPU usage by processes in TaskManager should give you enough info which process has high CPU usage, maybe you didn't tick show processes from all users on the bottom left corner in Task manager.

Thank you again for your response splico. I had checked "show processes from all users" and did previously already run Process Explorer, though didn't see anything abnormal running while Core 0 was spiking. I ran Process Explorer again today and saw that "Interrupts" was the only thing that had high CPU utilization at the same time that Task Manager was showing the spiked usage.

Is it possible for me to have a hidden virus or something? Or for the CPU itself to be flaking randomly?

Caught another screen grab when the 0 core was pegging all the way to 100%, and again "Interrupts" is the only thing that's "running", and eating up all the CPU cycles for that core.

Edit: the only thing that was happening at this time was a couple of web browser windows were loading, which previously would happen like greased-lightning with the SSD and near-zero lag from the processor.

Did some quick googling of "Interrupts" and specifically the description of "hardware interrupts and dpcs", and some of the sites listed that a large number/% of Interrupts could signal a bad disk. Is that even possible with an SSD and is there anything I can run to test whether the Intel SSD is indeed failing?

Sent you PM with the Speccy link (since it has my name in it and I'd prefer not to publish the link with that on the web). Thanks!

A PM to me...does not benefit the members viewing this topic and its progress.

If you followed the directions given...there is no "personal" info in the Snapshot that anyoen could possibly find any use for or exploit...you would know that if you took a look at all the other requests for the Snapshot link which other member's seeking assistance...have duly tendered.  The Speccy detail provided you is not the same one which appears in the Snapshot...that's why the Snapshot is a user option and we don't ask for a link to the section intended for the system user.

Thanks :).

It will take me a few minutes to review, I will edit this post with comments, if I have any.

Louis

Please run a new MiniToolBox, following the directions linked to above.  Post same, thanks.

I don't really see anything out of whack...the AV and browsers seem to be most resource-intensive, which is normal.  Office is normal.
