I continue to use XP sp3 but IE8 does not support some of my well used sites. Is it possible to remove IE8 from the startup?

Thanks for that advice Quietman7. I have managed to stop IE8 loading at start-up and Firefox is now running fine.

Before the removal of IE8, Firefox was plagued by 'Warning Unresponsive Script' messages.

Another huge memory grabber is vsmon.exe (247000K). It appears to be needed by Zone Alarm firewall but I use the Windows firewall. Is there a way of getting rid of vsmon.exe?

Once again, many thanks for your help in making my PC function properly. You have made this 70yo very happy.

Yes vsmon.exe is used by ZoneLab firewall to implement the access rules you have set in the firewall software...the startup entry is installed as a Windows service which you can stop and disable.

It is not uncommon for some programs to not completely uninstall itself using the usual method of Programs and Features or Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel due to the presence of related services and processes running in the background. Sometimes the uninstall works more effectively if you first stop and disable the program's service (and associated processes) or perform the removal in safe mode so there are less processes which can interfere with the uninstallation. If you don't do that, the program may be uninstalled but it leaves the service behind and running.
